1994 BLB Amateur Draft

I like DuFour and Coronel, two guys I was considering trading up for if they started to slip. DuFour is really good value at this point, a top 5-7 talent in this draft imo.

If someone in the next few picks is looking to move down, I'd be interested.

I'll make my pick after I get into the office. I know who I'm taking but I have a few possible deals so weighing my options.

I got the #1 hitter on my board who my scout thinks can play in the BLB this year. If anyone knows winners...it's my scout. The fact that he fell to me speaks otherwise.

Hopefully Hector, the 6'3, 225 lb Brazilian, will bring along his supermodel girlfriend and be everything we want him to be.

My scout loved Coronel and was a top my list...I knew he was going to go before my pick though. I have no idea how he fell by that much?

We ended up selecting Oka, he looks to be a nice power bat. He has a ways to go before we will see him in the BLB. We are pretty heavy on 1B in the system but once again I wanted to go with the best player on the board.

Ugh. Just could not make a decision and wasn't crazy about anyone except for a guy with a huge red flag and I couldn't convince myself to take him.

Went back and forth with a couple hitters after talking myself out of the second tier of starters, but landed on a guy out of nowhere, Omar Ramos. I'll try and develop him at short, and hopefully he pans out halfway towards what my scout thinks he can be.

Passed on a couple guys who should be considerably better hitters but might not have fit in the organization as well.

I haven't done as much homework on this draft as I normally do, but despite everyone's high praise for it being a "deep draft," the available prospects all have question marks. Normally at the 15th pick, I feel a lot better about a core group of potential picks...this year not at all.

I decided upon Travis DuFour, the control pitcher from Cal State Fullerton. For the past three years my scout has projected him to be a front of the rotation starter. OSA has projected him to be a #3-#4 type. His stats are great. His personality could be better but he's smart and wants to win.

I'd imagine he was still available because he will be on the DL for the remainder of the 1994 year with a elbow injury. I passed on drafting Gene Ball last year because he was hurt and that has proven to be a big mistake.

There are a handful of prospects I still "like."

4.5 hours later...let's go Pitt! I hate to make a 2 person list before I go to sleep. Nothing is better than making that live pick turned bust which will haunt you for years.

A few random thoughts:

- My scout thinks the best hitter in the draft is still on the board.

- My scout thought Fred Green was the best player in the draft. Wilmington has had an A+ draft so far.

- Israel Ortiz is definitely the worst pick of this draft to this point. He was somewhere in my high 20s among all pitchers. Yet in this pitching-heavy draft, he could still be a good 3rd/4th starter.

- I don't think Gerard will make it as a starter, but he could be one of the best long relievers the BLB has ever seen considering his ceiling and the extent to which he has already developed.

Its way better than it was IMO. Not a single pick outside the TOP 15-20 so far. In the old days, I'd see guys I had ranked in the hundreds taken top 10.

I do agree there.

Also makes me feel a little better about Ramos.

Although the other 3 I was considering are all still out there.

Even if he reaches my scout's potential, he's at best a glorified Larry Headington. But, I'm guessing others are seeing something I'm not. It's just still troubling to me that there's such discrepancy amongst scouts in the top 10-15 picks of the draft.

Well according to my scout, he was the #2 batter in the draft. I just wouldn't have listened to my scout. My favorite hitter is still on the board, so I can only pray he falls to us.

Pretty much agree. I've soured a little on INT players in the feeder era. They're SUPER slow to develop and (in my personal case) they seem more prone to disappear in the minors. That factors into my take on Burns being a better pick.

Hmm....never really noticed on international draftees. But then again, I never really looked.

I'm going to have to research that for our organization.

Same. I have a career AAA monster power SS that hit 30 dingers in the BLB one year but can't crack .200. His ratings are almost identical. If it's a "high" 4 then he's got a chance.

Can only go by what my scout says and he didn't love Burns' control or Coates' movement. Both Burns and Vleugel played "average" competition, but Vleugel just put up insane numbers. Also, Derek is "durable" according to my scout. Personally, I just think Vleugel had a slighty higher upside compared to Burns, but in all actuality, its really the development in minors what makes or breaks a guy.
