OF Glen Conley

Conley was a former first round pick who will forever be a bust no matter how mediocre he dreams of being. He had a decent spring and he's better than Raul Villanueva. Maybe.

My scout has him at 4-7-6-5-4 with zero speed and barely any defense.... should be our second best OF.

I think we must have had the same style scout at some point, because I remember really liking Conley in that draft too.

Doug Bates
1990 - 2.19 - #43 Overall Pick by California

- After what seemed like an eternity in the minor leagues (5 years), HS draftee Doug Bates is ready to make his BLB debut. Currently the #17 ranked prospect by OSA, Bates features a fastball that touches 100 and sits comfortably in the high 90's as well as a plus changeup and a developing slider.

The main concern with Bates, as it seems to be with all California pitching prospects, is his ability to consistently find the strike zone. If he's able to avoid free passes, Bates should be able to make an impact much like fellow rotation mate, Alex Torres, did in 1994.

1992 #17 Overall Pick by the Philadelphia Freedom

-This Georgia native was acquired as part of the blockbuster trade that sent future HOF pitcher, Gil O'Moore, to the Freedom early last year. After only one week in AAA ball, Baltmore is calling the kid up to see what he can do in the majors. Baltimore scouts rave about Gomez's ability to make contact with the ball calling him, "the best hitter in our organization." Also, his discernment at the plate is only getting better.

Gomez will likely start the season in left field, platooning with Baltimore star, Loren Wallace against lefties.

Hit machine. Adequate fielder. Mentioned many times in trade discussions. Former borderline top 100 prospect. Bouncing back from a fractured skull. Hopefully my manager uses him as the #1 pinch-hitting option.

Rookie SP Willie Harrison turned Caucasian on me; but who can argue with 7 - 3, 3.42/1.21/.226 ?
Rookie MR Abayghur Tulun discarded his uniform for street clothes; but with 9 BB & 46 K in 37 IP (2.19/0.92/.187) he has management's blessing.
Rookie 3B Nesty Garcia looks to be a legitimate .300+ hitter (.320/.346/.456). Nice place setter for Dickerson and Cavadas.

Besides a few changes in the bullpen.... Virginia has sent Artie Polk back to Detroit and will welcome....

Gill came over in the deal that sent Rod Phillips to Carolina and was always a guy that Virginia was watching in the minors. He's having a very nice AAA season (June BOM & ASG Selection) though his ratings aren't as good as his stats.

Gill will take some swings as the starting LF pushing Colon back to his natural 2B - where he'll platoon with Anibal Roman.

Lonnie Fowler (SP)
1992 #20 Overall Selection by Baltimore Bulldogs

-Lonnie Fowler has finally made his debut this year. While playing in the Cape Cod League with the Cotuit Kettlers, he pitched along side 1st round selections, Artie Benitez (1992 #4 Overall) and Tom "Fate" Stolarik (1995 #11 Overall). Obviously, that was a very fearsome starting rotation. Fowler has pitched well in a couple of his starts outside of Baltimore, and we look forward to seeing if he becomes a permanent part of our rotation in the coming years.

After watching another season swirl down the drain, I decided it was time to give some of my younger players a chance.

While I've shuffled four or five rookies in and out of the lineup, this past sim I called up a guy I hope will be the face of the franchise for the next 10-15 years.

#1 BA Prospect
RF - Sonny Marshburn

Marshburn was the third pick in the 1993 draft and has worked his way through the system with stops in A ball, AA and AAA. In 98 minor league games in 1995, Marshburn put up 13 HR's and 130 BB's for a combined OBP of .496 in AA/AAA.

In his first week of BLB ball, Marshburn put up a .381/.500/.476/.976 line with 2 SB's and 5 runs scored.

We're a ways away from competing... but I'm hoping Marshburn is the first building block in the return to relevance for the Kodiaks.

The guy gets on base (.382 OBP in 822 AAA at bats), has a little pop that's still developing (10 HR in 341 AAA at bats this year), and looks like he'll eventually hit for a decent average if his contact potential fully develops.
