  • Player Ratings System

One of the bigger league setup issues is the Player Ratings system.
The options are 1-5, 2-8, 1-10, 1-20, 1-100 or none displayed. You can set these individually for Player ratings, player talent(potential), other ratings(speed, stamina, fielding) and you can also set whether the players "Star" rating is displayed.

The game has pretty detailed scouting reports, but unfortunately you can't see them on the html exports. My preference would be to set them to "none displayed" and use scouting reports and stats as a guide, but the fact that you can't currently see scouting reports on the web, it might not be feasible.

Let me know what you guys think.

I would go with either 1-5 or 1-10.

I'm thinking 1-5. The important thing to note is that the 1-100 ratings still exist, but are just hidden. So two players rated a 5 could have very different performances, making owners rely more on a players actual production than just ratings.

Seeing some of the stats the new version is going to offer, I think a smaller ratings system or none at all is the way to go. I'm actually thinking the 2-8 scale that MLB uses might be better. It offers a good range, but isn't too specific. It's also important to consider the ratings are based on your teams scouts. So Team A might see different ratings than Team B, for the same player.

My ideal ratings system would be:
Batting and Pitching Ratings(Current): None Displayed
        Talent Ratings(Potential): 2-8
        Other Ratings(Speed, Fielding, etc): 2-8
        Star Ratings: On

This would force managers to use stats and scouting reports to field their teams but still give them a general overview of a player's ability and potential.

Here are the "basic" stats offered in OOTP 2006.

        Batting:
G, GS, PA, AB, H, TB, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR, SB, CS, RBI, R, K, BB, IBB, HP, SH, SF, CI, GDP, EBH, PITCHES SEEN, AVG, OBP, SLG, RC, RC27, ISO, TAVG, OPS, SBP, VORP

        Pitching:
IP, BF, AB, TB, HA, K, BB, R, ER, GB, FB, PITCHES, G, GS, W, L, SV, SA, DA, SH, SF, TA, HRA ,BK, CI, IW, WP, HP, GF, DP, QS, SVO, BS, RA, CG, SHO, SB, CS, HLD, R9, AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS, H/9, K/9, HR/9, BB/9, CG%, ERC, QS%, WIN%, RS, RS/G, SV%, BSV%, GF%, ERA, PI/G, WHIP, GBFB%, K/BB, BABIP, VORP

        Fielding:
G, GS, TC, A, PO, E, DP, TP, PB, SB ALLOWED, RUNNERS THROWN OUT, ER, IP, PCT, RANGE, RUNNERS THROWN OUT %, CATCHERS ERA

The game also does Splits and Double Splits now. For example:
        - The OPS of your prized prospect in games on the road, when he batted with runners in scoring position, down in Double-A
        - How many homeruns your veteran reliever surrendered on 0-2 counts in close & late innings, against your divisional rival

I'm a big fan of the 2-8 scale. In addition to what was mentioned above, it also offers an "average" rating (of a 5) as opposed to the 1-10 scale where there's no real middle-ground.

I'd be fine with 2-8, however my preference would be none at all. Makes trading, and all roster moves more risky.....just like real life.

I like the none at all idea, but it's a trade off. The new game has a pretty serious scouting system but I'm not sure it's viable in an online league. Without it, the only method you'd have to evaluate players is stats, which isn't realistic either.

Without using the scouting system, I think the 2-8 scale is a good compromise since two guys rated an 8 can have very different ratings. The ratings would provide a general idea, but more work would need to be done for owners to determine their actual ability.

It's also important to note that ratings don't guarantee production in OOTP, which is one of the great things about the game. For example, in my current game I'm at the all star break with the Red Sox. Manny and Ortiz have virtually identical power ratings yet Ortiz has 25 HR's while Manny has 7.

Good points. I'm down for the 2-8.
