  • 1978 Hitters 1st Round Draft Class

    1st, 1st - Mel Woodbury, RF, Philadelphia
1st, 4th - Grant Calver, SS, Los Almos
    1st, 8th - Carlos Bamentos, RF, Baltimore
    1st, 9th - John Gorrie, LF, Wilmington
    1st, 10th - Si Phan, 1B, Carolina
    1st, 11th - Norman Binns, 2B, Hartford (from Hyundai)
    1st, 12th - Ken Henshall, LF, Pittsburgh
    1st, 16th - Crist?n Perez, 2B, Windy City
    1st, 18th - Ryan Berose, SS, Denver

Well, Bamentos is A, Phan is in AA, Berose is in A, Binns AA, Calver A, Henshall A, and Perez AA, and they are all struggling.

Gorrie is in AAA and playing very well and Woodbury, also AAA, is heading to the BLB this week.

Looks like a big list of busts.

Bamentos sucks. I'm moving him up to AA tonight, just in case he's bored or something down in A-ball. But he sucks.

These lists will be a lot more interesting when we're comparing players we scouted ourselves, instead of the first year draft which was pretty much a crapshoot with SISA scouting.

Bamentos, according to SISA, appeared to be a can't-miss prospect. I was set to take him if Skerik passed on him. Boy, am I glad he didn't...

Oh, this was before the scouts huh...

        It was before my time.

Phan has been a complete bust. I moved him up to AA to see if he'd remember how to hit.

Like was said, this was before we had scouts turned on, so it was a pretty predictable draft. I still have the spreadsheet that Squint(HLewison on here I believe) made pre-draft.

Hitters are much more unpredictable. My 2b Joe Delgado did nothing (granted, he was taken in the original dispersal draft). Did jack crap his one year in AAA. Called him up to be backup, but when I got rid of Rochs, Delgado was just supposed to hold the position until Norman Binns got enough seasoning. Well, Delgado is doing well and I traded away Binns.

So you never know, just gotta give 'em a shot, kinda like in the bigs.

WAY too early to start evaluating these guys. I've seen many players not show anything til they were 23-24 yrs old.

I've also seen guys dominate in AAA and suck at the next level. Even seen guys not show much of anything til they got to the big leagues.

Developing young players is an art, not a science.

I think in 1983 we can start evaluating this draft better.
