Draft Pick Compensation - Sandwich Rounds

I don't think this would've been the case had the sandwich rule been in effect prior to the trading deadline. You guys would've easily made out with good young prospects, picks, or both.Originally posted by mahoney2Malachi Stiver will be one, Windley will also be one as well I'd imagine.

I think it increases the small market teams bargaining power because they always have compensation as a fall back option. The more likely scenario is they trade them away for something better. If I let Geake go to FA this year, he likely would have been a Type B player but instead I got a mid 1st rounder and 2 3rd rounders.
Like Mahoney said, I think the large market teams will be less likely to let their players go to FA which is why draft pick compensation helps the small market teams.
In any case, there's very few players this year that will be worthy of compensation. Windley and Stiver might be the only two from what I can tell. It will vary from year to year but right now there are only 9 Type A players in the league. With so few players bringing in compensation, I don't think it de-values the rest of the draft that much.

But once people are comfortable with the system, they'll know exactly what the alternative is to not trading, so they don't have to offer much more.Originally posted by AndrewI think it increases the small market teams bargaining power because they always have compensation as a fall back option. I don't think you'd get that deal next year. This is all new so nobody knows quite what they can/can't/should/shouldn't do. Hard to tell what a good deal is at this point.
But that will pass. And when owners adjust I think the type of trades will change with it.WINDY CITY PLAYBOYS

You think? If someone is willing to pay the price with a 1st and a 3rd (let's say) then the player is guaranteed on his team. Otherwise, he's taking a big risk in getting that player via free agency and not being outbid.Originally posted by JisticBut once people are comfortable with the system, they'll know exactly what the alternative is to not trading, so they don't have to offer much more.Originally posted by AndrewI think it increases the small market teams bargaining power because they always have compensation as a fall back option.
