Why not ammend the current rule to make it like the NBA... adding home grown talent is allowed to push your cap over 100.

Because that would be self-serving and violate what I believe many others felt was the spirit of the rule. In a way, it does benefit other teams because it puts more talent out there. However, I don't know that it was properly factored in that it would really penalize teams that just did a good job drafting.Originally posted by Lintyfresh85 View PostWhy not ammend the current rule to make it like the NBA... adding home grown talent is allowed to push your cap over 100.The Great One!

A) I wouldn't say it's the worst contract in the league but I wouldn't want him under that deal on my squad, no matter what team I am.Originally posted by Clay View PostA) Poling isn't a bad contract
B) Poling isn't part of the silent auction
C) Poling helped put your ass out of the playoffs
B) Irrelevant.
C) That doesn't make him good. Carlton was so upset by how well Poling hit off him that he declined my three year, $28 million, guaranteed offer, last sim...because he knew he didn't deserve to be paid.
Well, that's not quite true. The contract that is causing the majority of this bailout is Woodbury. You didn't draft him. And he was actually traded by Philly, because he knew he couldn't afford him...which technically, you can't either.Originally posted by Clay View PostAnd for the record on the bailout thing.... I should be pissed... livid really. I'm being absolutely screwed because of this CAP. The idea of the cap was to keep big budget teams from raping the small teams in Free Agency with contracts. I'm losing all guys that I drafted. If this were happening to a small market team there would be an uproar.Wilmington Wildcats- 2057-

I think it was factored in. If you draft 10 great players in a 2-3 year span and they all hit Arb at the same time, you're simply not going to be able to afford them all and field a full team. I think that's part of the point of the cap. The origins of the players don't really matter.Originally posted by Clay View PostBecause that would be self-serving and violate what I believe many others felt was the spirit of the rule. I can pull a pretty large list of guys making over $7.3 per season that can't touch Poling. In fact, after the latest arbitration hearings, that list grew exponentially.Originally posted by Pat View PostA) I wouldn't say it's the worst contract in the league but I wouldn't want him under that deal on my squad, no matter what team I am.

Doesn't qualify for the bailout term. Woodbury isn't a bad contract. In fact, look at every guys in the league history that has made over $18.0 per and I'll guarantee they aren't on Woodbury's level. You'll argue because you're you.... but he's the best player in the BLB. In the open market, he'd get $25.0. He actually has a good contract.Well, that's not quite true. I think the small market teams would argue that this is what they've been dealing with all along. Not in the sense of an actual cap, but the Owner imposed budget that prevents them from spending on their own guys at times when they simply become too expensive. I don't think the cap was put into simply to prevent FA signings, it was to bring more competitive balance to the league by limiting the amount of talent one team could build/acquire.Originally posted by Clay View PostAnd for the record on the bailout thing.... True, I haven't looked at the arbitration numbers. We will put it this way... If Poling stays with the Colonials through the remainder of that contract, I will be absolutely shocked.Originally posted by Clay View PostI can pull a pretty large list of guys making over $7.3 per season that can't touch Poling. You are once again putting words in my mouth. Where did I say that Woodbury had a bad contract? I said you couldn't afford him and quite frankly with you being over the cap, you can't. I may even argue that besides a few $280K guys, Woodbury, on that deal, for two years, might be the best contract in baseball. He is the best player in the league.Originally posted by Clay View PostDoesn't qualify for the bailout term. Woodbury isn't a bad contract. My argument, was in counter to your "I'm being penalized for drafting good," when in fact three of your four highest paid players, Woodbury $20, O'Hegarty $16 and Phillips $10.5, were not drafted by your organization.Wilmington Wildcats- 2057-

I didn't read that as calling it a bad contract. He's certainly worth it.The fact is Woodbury eats up 1/5 of your salary cap. Money well spent, but it forces tough decisions on other players. In my world he would have eaten up 1/4 of my budget. That was one of the driving foreces behind me dealing him. I knew I wouldn't be able to afford his extension.Originally posted by Clay View PostDoesn't qualify for the bailout term. Woodbury isn't a bad contract. And they'd be right. Obviously Maine is in a much different financial situation than when we started but I've let plenty of homegrown players go over the years that I couldn't afford because of my budget.Originally posted by BradZ View PostI think the small market teams would argue that this is what they've been dealing with all along.

Ok, three of your top four $ players, were not acquired in the amature draft. Happy?Originally posted by Clay View PostI drafted Phillips. Rule V is a draft.
Not without a bailout.Originally posted by Clay View Postbut the most important thing is I can easily shave $20.5 and still be the team to beat in the IL.Wilmington Wildcats- 2057-

But I don't need a bailout. I can outright release $20.0 in contracts. The team I'm going to field in '92 is the same whether I get picks, players or nothing for those contracts.Originally posted by Pat View PostNot without a bailout.
I'm still by far the best team in the Stout (especially with the recent passing of Martin Carlton). And, depending on FA, may easily still be the best in the IL.The Great One!

The salary cap is on player salaries not player expenses. He'd still take the financial hit, but not the cap hit.Originally posted by Pat View PostContracts aren't guaranteed in the BLB? Since when?Philly Freedom
