  • The 2032 Daily Keg - Week 5

    (AP)

Everyone played a full seven games this week and the Santo Domingo Rum Runners were the champion after going 7-0 with sweeps of Toronto and Wilmington. Hartford also responded after a lackluster few weeks by going 6-1. Seven teams then went 5-2, including Seattle who rose to the top of the power rankings. Meanwhile New Orleans, Windy City, Montreal, Denver, Wilmington and Phoenix all went 1-6. Some random stat team leaders for the week: Baltimore with 13 home runs and 45 total runs, Santo Domingo with a 2.12 ERA and 1.00 WHIP, Syracuse with 9 stolen bases, Wilmington with 5 triples, and Indy with the only complete game/shutout of the week.

    Performance of the Week

1B Johnny 'Big Stick' Swope - The Big Stick found his stroke on May 9th when he had two home runs in four hits, three runs batted in, and scored three times himself in a 10-3 victory over the New York Knights. On the season he's hitting .366 with 9 HR's, 22 RBI's, and a 1.9 WAR.

    Injury of the Week

P Alex Salazar - A few big injuries this past week but none longer than Salazar who on May 9th against Denver tore his rotator cuff at the end of the 6th after getting out of a bases loaded jam. The 38 year old has been in Washington three season and was having another solid campaign, but early projections show him to be out for over a year. With a career 994 games in the BLB recording a 2.96 ERA and 1.15 WHIP this might have been his last.

    Prospect of the Week

1B Bryce Wallace - The 17 year old for the Alac C Pope Generals recently smashed his 50th career HS home run and was named the MVP of the All-Star game last month. His power is undeniable but he loves to swing early and often, but even so he's still hitting .329/.455/.714 with 19 HR's and 52 RBI's in 41 games this year.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. The Wilmington Wildcats signed SP Kaleb Purvis to a 4 year/$54m extension on May 7th and he went out and rewarded them with a four inning, five earned run loss on the 9th. Last season he was 11-7 with a 3.52 ERA and 3.7 WAR in 28 starts but this year he has struggled to the tune of 2-4 with a 6.89 ERA and 56 ERA+.

    2. Baltimore has rebounded nicely after starting the season 0-7 to get to 15-16 and only 4.5 games out of the Stout lead while being tied for the 4th wildcard spot. As mentioned above they led the league this past week in home runs and runs scored and are now 2nd and 3rd in the IL in those categories. If they weren't 0-4 in extra innings and 3-7 in one run games they might be leading their division.

    3. The rebound team in the DL is SDR who started out their season 2-11. Since then they are 18-5 with the best ERA in the league (2.54) and highest batting average (.307). Starters Tom Gowens and Kris Ball have been absolutely on fire in their last few starts with a combined 6-0 record and 0.78 ERA. Offensively the Zachary Bradley trade has been dynamite as he is hitting .380/.441/.705 with 10 HR's and 30 RBI's and a 2.3 WAR. Meanwhile the 'tradee' Jarrod Peacock for Philadelphia is 0-4 with a 4.93 ERA and 0.4 WAR.

    4. Its May 10th and Turell 'Two Ton' Morris has 17 home runs and six more than 2nd place. He's on pace for 89 total and a 11.1 WAR, and we've frankly run out of things to say.

    5. With the draft going full bore let's look back at the 2031 draft. So far only one player has played in the BLB, #2 overall Seth Blankenship out of the CCBL who was drafted by Syracuse. In 31 games with the Snappers he's hitting .293/.343/.475 with 4 HR's and 14 RBI's. He also has a +0.1 ZR in center field and has committed only two errors in 100 chances. At 21 years old he went straight from the CCBL to AA in 2031 and is easily on pace to be the DL New Brew.
