  • The 2038 Daily Key - Week 7

    05/24/2038

    (AP)

As the team celebrates 30 years since their last Brewmasters Cup title the Dinos move into first place in the power rankings with a 5-2 week. At 30-15 they now hold the Bock lead over California by three games and have the second best record in the league. The best week though was had by those who needed it the most as Santo Domingo went 5-1 to get out of the Lager basement. Other big weeks were had by Windy City, Phoenix, Indy, and Denver who all went 5-2. Syracuse brought up the rear this week by going 1-6 and Baltimore, Hartford, Washington, Batavia, and Montreal all went 2-5.

    Power Rankings

    Performance of the Week

P Sheng 'Admiral' Jong - On May 17th against Montreal the 'Admiral' turned in the second best pitching performance of the season. In a complete game shutout he allowed only two hits, struck out 10, and walked none during an 8-0 Rum Runners victory. The Exports didn't manager their first hit until the 6th inning, a single by Ron Brazil, and by then the game was already out of reach. On the season Jong is 3-4 with a 2.01 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in nine starts.

    Injury of the Week

1B Ahmed Salter - Poor Ahmed. He's been on the injury report 18 times over his career and the latest is a strained PCL which will keep him out several weeks. This follows up a sprained knee in March and a strained quadriceps in May. He was the 10th pick of the 2nd round for the Canadians back in 2029 and last year hit .321 with 29 HR's and 111 RBI's. So far this season though he's only played in 12 games and while he is hitting .409/469/.615 he has no home runs and five RBI's.

    Prospect of the Week

P Skylar Dalton - The 20 year old for the Longhorns had quite the season. In 17 regular season appearances he pitched in 21.1 innings, gave up zero runs, struck out 40, and walked seven. He didn't give up a run until the Sweet 16 when he allowed Rice to score one in the top of the 9th to tie up a game they eventually won in the 10th. He almost hits triple digits on the radar and throws a devastating fastball with a nice change-up.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. Just another week for Windy City ace Barton Mejia. The scouting discovery out of Guatemala back in 2030 has worked his way in the #1 rated pitcher in the BLB. This past week he was 2-0 over 16.3 IP with 18 K's. He leads the BLB in strikeouts with 78 and is currently 6-0 with a 2.24 ERA and 0.86 WHIP. He's on pace to easily win his first Pale Ale since 2035.

    2. Syracuse is now 9-36 on the season and projected to finish with 42 wins, which at least eclipses last seasons debacle. Word on the street though is that they are selecting Rice starting pitcher Christian Vines with the 1st overall pick of the 2038 draft. At only 19 years old Vines is almost major league ready and is projected to be one of the top pitching prospects to ever come out of the NCAA. He was 3-1 with a 1.48 ERA during the regular season, and pitched Rice into the Regionals when he came in during the deciding Sweet 16 game against Texas during the 12th inning. He pitched two hit less innings and picked up the win when Rice got a walked it off in the 13th. Now combine him with 22 year old starter Phil Curry who plays for Syracuse's AA team. Curry was a 3rd round pick in 2033 and has blossomed into the #2 overall prospect in the league. That's a heck of a 1-2 combo down the road...and by down the road we mean possibly by 2040.

    3. Every time we see Turell 'Two Ton' Morris sitting at home as an unsigned free agent it pains us. We used a lot of ink on 'Two Ton' from 2029 to 2033 when he had arguably one the greatest hitting runs in history. The seven time All-Star and single season record holder with 69 home runs in 2030 still has his sweet swing, but even in a DH world he just can't find a job. Last season he was underused and underappreciated in California and was even sent down to AAA for a week. This year several teams have reached out to him but no organization has pulled the trigger yet. In a full season he's still projected to hit 35+ home runs and it's just a shame to see the 35 year old out of work.

    4. Three teams have hit the million mark in attendance so far...Hartford, Wilmington, and Washington. The Bats led all with over 3.4 million fans last season with California and Seattle just a few fans behind. No one has more home wins (17) than the Bats so at least they leave happy most of the time.

    5. Ethan Jackson of California has not blown a save in 68 chances. He is now tied for 3rd all-time with T.J. 'Tubby' Mileski who played for Pittsburgh from 2000-2015 with a brief single season stopover in Indy. Second place is Ivan Olivo who checks in with 76 and first place belongs to Hall of Fame closer Jon Cleary who recorded a 78 game save streak with Maine.
