  • The 2038 Daily Key - Week 10

    06/14/2038

    (AP)

Been a minute as we stepped away for a few weeks and we come back to the Evil Empire...er the Washington Bats as the top team in the PR. With everyone playing six interleague games the Bats went 5-1 and now hold a 5.5 game lead in the Stout. Other 5-1 weeks belonged to Indy and Pittsburgh as the Racers are now 36-30 and in third place in the Lager, while Pittsburgh is 30-35 and in second place in the Ale. The big winner of the week though was New Orleans who went 6-0, have won seven straight, and now have a three game lead over Toronto for the Lager lead. The Voodoo had their brooms out against Baltimore and New York as they hit .314 for the week and scored 39 runs. Overall it wasn't a good week for the Stout as Baltimore, Philly, and New York all went 1-5.

    Top Performance

P Barton Mejia - We missed posting about this last week but Mejia turned in the #1 pitching performance of the season on June 2nd against California. In a complete game shutout he struck out 14, allowed only one hit (in the 8th) and walked one during the 5-0 Blues victory. On the season the 25 year old is now 8-0 with a 1.81 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, and 240 ERA+. He's on pace for a 10.0 WAR season.

    Injury of the Week

RF Zachary 'Salesman' Karp - The 27 year old former scouting discovery out of Sri Lanka had finally moved into the starting role after a lot of shuffling done by the Millers organization the past few weeks. He then proceeded to get hurt going from first to third in the first inning of the June 13th game against Denver and will be out of action almost a month and a half. This season he was hitting .333/.365/.596 with 7 HR's and 33 RBI's in only 30 games and new manager JP Scott was giving him his shot.

    Prospect of the Week

RF Malcolm Guaba - The 22 year old was a 1st round pick by California in 2036 and is currently playing for their AA team. In 42 games he's hitting .384/.468/.711 with 10 HR's and 43 RBI's. So far this season he has been the Player of the Week three times and the Batter of the Month for May. Coaches love his work ethic and scouts think he has the ability to be a DWI winner in the outfield.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. The BLB draft will happen Wednesday and organizations around the league are excited to see where their picks land among their own top prospects and league wide as well. With the current #1, Denver's Cy Rocha, playing in the BLB it is only a matter of time before we have a new #1. Will Snappers starter Phil Curry assume the throne, or possibly New Orleans star shortstop Colby 'Mirror' Hullinger? Time will tell as the new report should be out next Monday.

    2. Two more brawls marred BLB games this week as New York and Indy squared off on June 11th and New Orleans and Baltimore squared off on June 12th. The Knights starting pitcher Harvey Leichtfuss was given a seven game suspension after beaning Havelock Fibich, and Bulldog's reliever Kiyotake Inouye was given four games after hitting Voodoo shortstop Bing-zhang Lopan. Baltimore started the game with Platon Frangopoulos on the mound and after trying to spell all these names we're done with this segment.

    3. The All-Star game is a little over a month away and so far Seattle's Dave Hoyt and Wilmington's Archie Thorington lead their respective leagues in votes. So far the only position players who lead and have not been previous All-Stars are Toronto second basemen Jake Poole and Rum Runner's CF Chet Sanchez. Poole was the 12th overall pick in the 2033 draft while Sanchez was the 7th overall pick by Carolina in the 2032 draft.

    4. In one of two blockbuster trades this past week the DK's favorite son Seth Blankenship was sent from Santo Domingo to Denver along with Edwin Meck for a plethora of prospects. The 27 year old was hitting .260/.308/.525 with 13 HR's and 8 SB's with a +4.2 ZR in center. The other trade involved Santo Domingo sending Sheng 'Admiral' Jong to Batavia for another plethora of prospects. We're going to go out on a limb to say the SDR fire sale had a very successful first week.

    5. The BLB currently has 13 players with a .400+ OBP, and several more within a few points. Last season there were 11, the highest since 1999. Can you name them?

We weren't totally convinced about Guaba when we made that pick, since he didn't project much power, ,but he seems to be doing everything he can to force his way through the organization as quick as possible!

Guaba was most definitely the right move. In fact, I hate you for it.
