  • The 2040 Daily Keg - Week 2

    04/23/2040

An early match-up between the two leagues propels Pittsburgh to the top of the PR after they had sweeps of Baltimore and Philadelphia and go 6-0. The Racers meanwhile shoot up to #2 after going 4-2 against Denver and Carolina. The other big week was Windy City who was 5-1 against Dallas and Syracuse. On the other side of life Toronto, Philly, Baltimore and SDR all went 1-5. Considering after two weeks though that the Bulldogs four wins are the bottom, and the Millers nine wins are the top, its looks like we might be in for a lot of close races across the board.

    Performance of the Week

LF Charles Farris - In a 14-5 drubbing of Toronto on April 18th he had four hits, three of which were home runs, drove in five and scored four times. The 29 year old former 1st round pick is now hitting .245/.268/.509 with 4 HR's and 8 RBI's for the season. Out of his season total of 13 hits, 31% of them have been long balls.

    Injury of the Week

P Israel Levy - Our pick to represent the DL in the Brewmasters took a hit this week when on April 17th Levy tore his flexor tendon in his pitching elbow and will miss the rest of the season. The 1.3 pick of the 2037 draft has gone down for several weeks almost every season going back to his Arizona State days in the NCAA, including 2036 when he tore the same elbow ligament and missed 10 months. For the season he was 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in two starts.

    Prospect of the Week

P Shawn Allison - Currently the #21 prospect in the league he's 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA and 0.44 WHIP in two starts in A ball for the Baltimore franchise. He was the 5th overall pick of the 2038 draft, throws mid 90's, has four pitches including a devastating changeup, and has the stamina to throw complete games without breaking a sweat.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. On April 16th the Knights were up 8-2 over Syracuse in the bottom of the 8th with two outs. The Snappers in their never say quit attitude though saw Norm Cupp hit a two run blast, Darren Davis single, Dusty Elmore single and Jonathan Valenti double to suddenly make it 8-6 before the inning ended. New York failed to score in the 9th and up came Syracuse to try and pull off the comeback. A double, error, and then single scored another run and left two on for Norm Cupp to play hero. Cupp delivered and smacked another double which easily scored one to tie, and allowed Tommy Davis to go all the way from first to home to give them the huge come from behind victory. In other news the 9th inning double gave Cupp a cycle for the game, the second in the BLB this season. Last year there were a total of three.

    2. In milestone news New York's Brendan Matson recorded his 2000th career hit on April 19th against Maine. Drafted back in 2025 with the 3rd overall pick by Davenport he was picked up by Hartford in the supplemental draft of 2027. He played for the Whalers for nine season before bouncing around to New Orleans, Philly, New York, New Orleans again, Baltimore, and now New York again. He's a lifetime .282/.344/.503 hitter with four All-Star appearances, two Designated Drivers, and a BLB championship with Hartford back in 2030.

    3. California signed Alex Lezama to a nice four year extension valued at $44m this past week. Drafted by Philly back in 2029 he was traded to Hartford a month after the draft. He was then traded to California in 2031 and made his debut with the Kodiaks in 2034. Since then he has been a .297 career hitter who has won two DWI's in left field, was the 2036 Brewmasters Cup MVP, and is considered a spark plug in the California clubhouse due to his amazing work ethic. He's one of the most popular players for the franchise and should also help put fans in the seats.

    4. Barton Mejia started out the season a little rough with a 5.1 inning loss against Carolina on April 13th where he allowed seven hits and four runs. After he came into the season a little tired from a late Spring Training start people around the league were a little concerned he might have some other issue bothering him. Well wonder no more after he dominated Syracuse on April 20th with a five hit shut-out where he walked only two and struck out 11. The back to back Pale Ale and Triple Crown winner is now 1-1 with a 2.51 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with 14 K's and four walks.

    5. Josh Allen had to wait until the start of the season before he finally signed a two year deal with the Bulldogs after whispers around the league stated the 35 year old might be slipping a little. So what does he go out and do? How about in five games he hits .350/.435/1.000 with four home runs, six RBI's and and three walks. Who needs Spring Training when you are a grizzled vet.
