  • The 2059 Daily Keg - Week 7

    05/19/2059

It was a week of interleague rejoicing as Montreal, Pawtucket, California, Seattle, Toronto, Baltimore, and New Orleans all enjoyed playing their respective foes by going 5-1. It was a week of interleague sadness as Denver went 0-6, while Maine, Batavia, and Hartford all went 1-5. Stat wise Toronto scored 46 runs (Den 10), Washington hit 12 home runs (Den/Har 2), New Orleans allowed just 12 runs (Den 51), and opponents hit .196 off Toronto (Den .349).

    Performance of the Week

Ronald Anderson - We have a new #1 as Anderson took over the top spot with a 103 game score against LAD yesterday during a 15-1 beat down of the Dinos. Anderson hit an RBI single in the 1st, flied out in the 2nd, hit a two-run triple in the 4th, hit an RBI double in the 6th and hit a three-run home run in the 8th to cap off the second BLB cycle of the season. The 25 year old was the second overall pick of the 2051 draft, but sadly has never lived up to the expectations. The lifetime .258 hitter has never been an All-Star, but did win the Designated Driver at right field last season when he smacked 36 home runs and drove in 112 runs. With a performance like this maybe he's finally coming into his prime.

    Prospect of the Week

P Braydon Cox - The second overall pick from the 2054 draft is currently in AAA for the Roadrunners and only 21 years old. He throws five pitches, can hit 99 mph on the gun, and really likes dogs. Unfortunately he doesn't have the stamina to go deep into games, but scouts believe he can be a middle of the rotation pitcher. This season in six starts he is 2-1 with a 3.89 ERA, 40 strikeouts, and only five walks.

Five Things We Think We Think

    1. No one is putting butts in their seats like the Roadrunners this season. So far in 16 games they have filled their park to 99% capacity. Too bad the fans have had to watch them go 6-10 during those games, but still that's a lot of peanuts and popcorn being sold. On the other side of life Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower Field in Philadelphia is a ghost town for recent home stands. To date the stadium has been filled only to 46.2%, almost 35% below the league average. In their first home game of the season on April 17th they had 39,772 come through the turnstiles. This past Tuesday against Pawtucket they had only 11,266. Ouch.

    2. Denver is 12-27 and only one game better than the Freedom, but they have a lot to be excited about in Johnathan 'Stony' Wang. The 21 year old rookie was the fifth overall pick of last years draft, and is now a full time starter for the Bulls in left field. Last season after winning the College World Series with Clemson he got drafted, then played for all three Denver affiliates in Little Rock, Oklahoma, and Tuscon. This year he got the call up for Spring Training and never went back down. So far in 38 games he's hitting .360/.385/.567 with 4 HR, 14 RBI, and 6 stolen bases. His 153 OPS+ is tops among all rookies and he's on pace for a 4.8 WAR. He's also in the midst of a league leading 14 game hit streak. Go Wang Go!

    3. Congrats to Sage Emerson who hit his 300th career home run this past week. The 31 year old was the first overall pick of the 2048 draft by Hartford. He turned into a 4x All-Star who has a career slash line of .285/.353.536 with 302 home runs and 849 runs driven in. To go along with his 25.9 WAR he's also amassed almost $84m in salary. Only two players have more career WAR than him out of that draft. The second overall pick, Beau Pruett (29.3) and second round pick Parker Lee (36.3). Pruett is a 5x All-Star, while Lee is a 6x All-Star and 3x Brewmasters champion with the Bats.

    4. Alex Landrum has quickly become the ace of the Cyclones staff. This season he's 5-1 with a 2.39 ERA and 163 ERA+. In his last two starts he's 2-0 with 14 IP, 1 run allowed, 1 walk, and 22 strikeouts. He was a third round pick back in 2052 after going 7-6 with a 4.15 ERA in 21 high school starts. He had a rough go in the Rookie League, but since then he posted winning records in A, AA, and AAA before getting called up in 2056 at only 21 years old. He's now 24, throws a 101 mph fastball, and loves chili dogs.

    5. What's on tap? First place Seattle gets the gauntlet this week as they head on the road to play California, before flying home to take on Baltimore. The Pilots have the best record in the league thanks to a pitching staff that is first in the league in runs allowed, opponents average and strikeouts. Two more great series are Washington at Carolina and Wilmington at Montreal. Both home teams are looking to get back to the playoffs after missing last season. Streak wise Denver's Wang has a 14 game hitting streak, Brian Wheat (TOR) has scored in nine straight, and Alexander Charter (NYC) has homered in three straight.
