  • 3-4 vs 4-3

There seems to be a lot of love for the 3-4 in this league. Can someone eleborate. Does it work better for the game. I know some things don't follow along with real football.

I would not go as far as to say it works better for the game... But from my observations and from reading different write-ups, the 3-4 seems to be more gimmicky. In a 3-4, you can pick up guys who don't necessarily have great overall ratings but who will work well in the defense.

Personally I like to play the 4-3 when I can get the right players. I'm not sure if I have sound reasoning for that... although I have a hard time getting the same results out of a 3-4 that I can from a 4-3.

I play a 3-4 here because it just worked out that way. Carlos Melnick, who I picked up in the 4th round this past draft, may just be the perfect guy to play WLB in a 3-4 (great pass rushing skills and hopefully ok run defending). I already had Corbett at SLB and Price to play in the middle. Downs in the 2nd of last year's draft rounded things out nicely. I don't have any fantastic DEs to play my usual 4-3.

You may want to check the following thread by Ben. He talks about how to run an effective 3-4:

I always ran a 3-4 before I joined this league and just ran 4-3 because my team was set up for it. Someday I might switch, but it's working well enough right now.

Something I'm curious about: do the DEs get more pressure in the 4-3? It has seemed that way to be, but it's just anecdotal. Plus it might just be because I'm not seeing LB sacks anymore that makes me think that.
