I threw in a random renegotiation try this week. It was a bit of a lowball offer. Stoked that WR Colin Fletcher accepted it. He was asking 26.25m/4 years. Threw some extra bonus his way and made it a flat contract. He accepted at 20.94m, and now I'm wondering if I could have gone even lower. Had no idea there was this much wiggle room possible! Posting this so the rest of you can try it if you haven't already

Fletcher and Foley were both due for contract years next season, which (along with Foster, Cote, Keisel, Melnick...) was more than I wanted to deal with. Although now, Fletcher shares a contract year with Boone, which...ew.

You can squeeze some extra cap by renegotiating, but you're not going to be able to get an unfair advantage out of it. Used to be that way I guess, just not any more.

Renegotiations in the last year don't work any differently than renegotiations in earlier years. A player in the last year of his contract will often take a cut in Year 1 of the renegotiated salary, and then ask for extra guaranteed $, plus extra years. Same idea in earlier renegs: save now (or don't, if the player is that good), but give them more bonus/years.

Fletcher was due 4.54 million guaranteed in 2022 and 2023. Now he gets 8.78 for the same time period, almost double. His salary got upgraded, too. And he gets 4.24 more guaranteed, on top of that 8.78.

You save on last year renegs, too. WLB Ian Subramanian is in his last year. If I renegotiate him, I'd save $2 million in cap costs this year! You can always renegotiate to save cap space now and pay more later, if you want to. Whether it's in the last year or not.

Oh, one thing to add, I am pretty sure renegotiating the same guy every year wouldn't be a good idea in any circumstance. The only way that makes sense is if his salary demands keep going down from year to year: down enough that you can keep pouring bonus and still save money. Doubtful. Only players whose salary demands should decrease are veterans, and those guys are some greedy SOBs

An example that I think illustrates the equivalence of the "last year reneg" vs "earlier reneg." In Fletcher's case, I renegotiated early because I'm afraid he'll have a beast year, start all 16 games, and ask for a lot more next year.

Last year, I had two 3rd-year DEs in the last year of their cheap rookie contract. I could have waited until they were RFAs and given them new long-term contracts. I was worried they'd have breakout years and then ask for a lot more, so I re-did them both during the season.

Now, one of them (Kerr) would be asking for pretty much the same as he did last year. The other, Logan, would be asking for nearly three times as much. So renegotiating Logan was a really good move. Renegotiating Kerr was a really dumb move. If I hadn't renegotiated Kerr, I would have a) saved money last year, b) signed him at the same level he is now, and c) have him locked up for an extra season.

So now, the same decision is coming with Fletcher and Foley. If Fletcher, at this time next year asks not much more than he did this year, this would turn out to be a stupid move. I think, as a GM, these are the types of calls you should be able to make, especially when there is no exploit that lets you save guaranteed money.

Anyway, sorry for being so long winded. I only brought this up because I thought anyone who didn't know before (like me) should know how much room there is sometimes to go underneath what a guy asks for in reneg.
