    Here's an interesting case study:

    DT Lonnie Skladanowski - 49/49 - 5th year

I didn't know if this would be possible, but I beat all the offers shown here, some of them pretty decent, on a pretty significant FA, by offering 0 bonus, 1 year. No strings or commitment from me.

We can save the discussion for a later time because we should keep it consistent and roll with the rule, but just an interesting note. I'll release Sklad back into the pool; I was mostly just wondering if this kind of thing were possible. Sorry to Julio, for messing up your cohesion in the process :P

So you can cut him at no loss right?

I gotta get better at this financial thing.

          yeah, no loss.

Loss = bonus owed. That goes into Lost Cap Room.

On a multi-year contract, the cap penalty is divided between lost cap this year and lost cap next year.

So the 1 year rule should be post FA 2.5 or something like that?

Nah I think we just keep going as is. It's mostly fine and I like the freedom of offering short deals really, but this is an example of something odd that is probably unintended.

I'm still curious though, what a minimum bonus 2-year, 10 million deal, beats out.

You don't have to release him back into the pool, the signing is within the rules.. I think this is just going to help show why the 3 year rule for all FAs should be in place. People won't have to think whether a guy is worth the money or not because they will be able to sign with no consequences pretty much anyone except the super studs who are worth more than 5 million a year. IF we're going to have a 1 or 2 year rule, the maximum offer should be the league minimum or very close to it.

I guess my argument would be if I were an owner who were truly interested in this particular player I could have easily signed him to a two year deal away from you if I was so inclined.
