I knew you liked him.

I liked him too; 7.10 agil score on a DE is a great sign. I took Whitson in the same form a few years ago, and I could use a CB more than a DE right now after getting Walker last year.

Good catch ;) I remember gushing about Whitson when he fell but wanted the futures then.

We are playing a very dangerous game here in Utah. We started with two first rounders and three second rounders, and after some narrow misses, have now traded out of all of them. Our first pick of this draft will come at 3.11. At least, it looks that way for now.

Partyin' like it's 2016 here in Washington, the year we drafted A.J. McGee & Corwin Metzenbaum with the 1.6 and 6.7 picks. Nine years, 100 TDs, an MVP and a ring later, and we're hoping to strike gold in the running game again.

RB was not our biggest need, but Hanks was certainly the best player available. And was pretty enthused to land Tuiososopo in the 2nd. Whole new backfield. Now if we can just re-sign Austin reasonably.

Safety J.B. "One if by land, two if" Bynaker, becomes the first Utah selection of this draft.

Longshot to make the team. Splendid We were so happy just to make a pick that it took all of three seconds to turn the card in on this one.

The last couple of players to headline Utah drafts were guys like Mitch Prescott and Quinn Robinette, and the 3.11 selection where Bynaker got taken came from the trade of beloved former 3.10 selection Howard Cote .... so no pressure or anything.

Portland first 2 rounds

Portland has had a crazy 1st two rounds of the draft.

Portlands first move was Drafting there number 1 target of the Draft at 1.10 Ted Pleasants. He is 6'4 250 Lbs and runs a 4.4 40, is very smart and accurate with the ball. His only negative is that he is not very consistant with the deep ball.

After this aquisition Portland Trades current starting QB Eddie Castillo for multiple picks setting up there next blockbluster trade to get both LT Lawrence Sivea and LG Harvey Borders, as well as there 1.30 Pick for a future 1st and package containing 2 seconds and a 3rd.

With pick 1.30 Portland selects the 3rd WR on its board in Blaine Bauer, he is a burner that Portland expects to start opposite of incumbent WR Nugent.

Late in day 1 Portland makes another trade to aquire veteran FA ILB Howard Cote, which helps solidify a Linebacking core that led the 3rd ranked defense in the League last year.

Moving on to the 2nd round Portland aquired two potential starter, first off is RT Lawrence Reese who will be on an offensive line that boast 4 Probowlers, they also aquired ILB Stanley Wooden who will compete for starting time with newly aquired Cote. Reese was Portlands 3rd ranked OT on the board and Wooden was there 4th ranked ILB.

Wait later for 3rd thru 7th round draft analysis.

Pick two for the Bees wouldn't come until nearly a round later. After moving down from 3.31, Utah takes its man all along in tackle Rich Ansell. We glared at Morgantown for Adrian Brent, who looks extremely solid and has leadership potential, but Ansell isn't a bad fallback, and has enormous upside. He's the definition of a project; some scouts have estimated that he's only tapped 5% of his potential.

This makes for tackle #5 for the Bees, meaning the roster demands a sacrifice.

Pick three of the '24 draft was made in similar fashion to picks one and two. Both times we select our man after being fortunate enough to trade down from a previous selection where they would have been the top (or close to top) choice, enabling us to get a player while taking on a smaller risk / expense.

After selecting a #5 safety and a #5 tackle, we add to this list Ryan Green out of Florida State -- a #5 RB. Just a bruiser who doesn't have the complete package we are looking for, but as much upside as any of the RBs after the top of round 2 that we have scouted this draft.

Portland Rounds 3-5

Herb Schrack - TE from Stanford, 3.31; Herb is has big play ability from the tightend position, with slightly questionable hand, he is a great run blocker and will immediatly take the #2 TE role.

Portland had two 4th round selections - Doug Froese OLB and Arnie Rodgers. Rodgers was the first kicker selected in the draft and for reason he has a strong leg and is deadly accurate. Doug on the other hand was drafted not for need but draft quality, he was top on there board and will immediatly push to see playing time in the near futre for now he is a solid special teamer.

Portland had three 5th round selections - Possession WR (Bobby Engram type) who has a knack for making one handed 3rd down catches Brenden Wester, Todd Maxwell a pass rushing specialist DE from Air Force, and DT Ty Fisk an undersized DT with a high motor and had a very producted college career and only dropped this far because scouts said he was undersized for th OSFL.

A very interesting draft for Utah. Missing out on our (few - something we don't intend to repeat) top targets early left us in a lurch, and pretty soon we found ourselves with little current-year flexibility and no high picks. Our highest selection came at the #75 spot, in a draft that has to be considered extremely deep and talented.

We did what we could with the depth, and our lack of draft assets required us to sit back and be patient. In that regard, we were extremely fortunate. At no point in our 7 on-the-clock selections did we have to dig very deep or find a prospect that wasn't already one of our top one or two targets at the position for that round. There were few times where we felt really, truly scooped beyond round 2 (the big exception being 3.28 DT Doug Hopkins to Punxsutawney). And we never had to double-dip an already drafted position, something we were fairly concerned about.

A run-down of our final four selections:

5.31 OLB Doug Alfred - joining the youth movement in the Utah LB corps following Howard Cote's departure. Probably gets look at SLB first. Not the ST guy but I see some real potential here.
6.31 DE Marvin Lyons - upside upside upside. The DE position is really well stocked, so DE #5 has little pressure riding on him, but if he booms, he could let us part ways with borderline starter and UTA backup Rondell Tyler.
7.14 TE Ty Knight - would've liked a ST gunner at the position, but on pure TE skills, was an emerging late round option. Didn't spend too much time looking into him, so a bit of a longshot.
7.31 WR Geoff Leinaweaver - longshot at another position we didn't need, but the speed to burn was too much to pass up. If we does as well in camp as our 2.32 receiver last season...well, that's what we are hoping.

So much for that LB chemistry, I guess it was a bad omen to trade him because the pick that you got ended up being cursed and traded to someone else.

Gainesville is pleased to have revamped it's WR corp. Out of their first 4 picks in this years draft, 3 of them were spent on WR's.

1.3 Paul Harward 51/80 looks to be the real deal, will replace the retired legend Darryl Feigenbaum, and play opposite of Julio Strickland...they will create a very proficient WR duo, possibly the best tandem in the league.

1.32 Monty Thompson 27/59 will make an excellent 3rd WR, and will settle into that role immediately, as the other WR's on the roster just aren't that good. His Big Play ability is the reason he was drafted in the first place, and with the Strickland/Harward combo on the field, Thompson will make teams worry about which WR to cover.

4.31 Rodney Limbeck 16/58 was drafted for depth at the WR position. His AD, GD, RR, 3rd Down catching will provided breathers for the other 3 WR's when needed, and he should be able to help keep the chains moving when on the field, and not be a liability, like some of the previous holdover WR's.

4.15 G Norman Cassidy 18/62 was the other pick from my first four. He looks to be a very good G, that will provide much needed youth at that position. It could be a year or two before he starts, but that's to be expected for a 4th round pick.

I loved the Gainesville draft. A lot depends on the 1.32 WR (sort of) that quite a few of us got VU on and were really upset was taken. If he makes it, that's massive and wildly successful (1.3....) turnaround in the receiver corps in one fell swoop.

Very interesting player here: 2.24 QB Greg Pinson, to Kalispel. 6'4, 223 guy with a 40 sole and 11 formations, coming in at 30/61. Looks like a find here.

Memphis seems to have had a really good draft with Chuck Barnes (44/62) in the 1st, and stuuuuuuuuuuuud pass blocker Rodney Corbett (27/35) in the 3rd, brought in to help run that water gun offense. Corbett looks like he has the chance to pop pretty big.
