  • Volatility?

maybe we should have a section for n00b's to ask questions.

Here's another one, what does volatility mean? is high good or bad?
I searched the help files, but couldn't find anything.

How do we read into ratings? what is the scale, 0-100?

My explanation of volatility is that it measures how much of a sure thing a player is. high volatility is like a guy in the mold of a Vince Young. everybody knows he's a bad ass, but can his game translate to the nfl?

I think it also has something to do with performance consistency, but I am unsure on that one.

On the other hand, a player with low volatility, in my opinion, would be a guy like A.J. Hawk. Pretty much everyone knew he would be a good LB.

For ratings, a scale of 1-100 is used, but really, a player in the 60's is probably better than a majority of the players at his position. Most players rate around 40 or so, while there are a few standouts, and the best of the best make it up into the 80's and 90's.

To me, this is a very realistic way of portraying a league.. most players have similar talent levels, but there are those few who really just stand a cut above.

I'm pretty sure the scale is 1-100. I think anything over 50 is considered "Good" by the scouts in game.

Jim explained volatility thusly: "Volatility simply indicates how likely the player is to boom or bust. That's all there is to it."

Actually, the ratings scale is 0-100, and ratings are distributed on a roughly logarithmic scale.

            0 - Roster Filler - 53.4%
Ignore the numbers for this discussion, but the percentages give you a pretty good indicator of how the talent is distributed.

Another good way to examine talent distribution at a position is to do the following, starting in the "Roster Commands" box on the main game screen:

            1. View Rosters-->Recommend Player (lower right)
            2. Change "Select from" box from "Free Agents" to "Current Rosters".
            3. Select a position in the upper left.
            4. "Rank based on" Current Value.

            Screenie:

Once you're at the screen above, hit "Search", and this will show you, according to your scout, the best 25 quarterbacks in the league. Just change the position selection to see others.

You are helpful, and I will try and read the "F1" help in the game.
But asking questions on this board is much easier than searching through the FOFC board.
