  • Week 17 Discussion

Because I hate using [spoiler] tags, and because it appears we won't be getting those auto-posts this week '

    --

    Utah/Phoenix: wow.

We returned center Stephen Wells from a 11-game injury break this week, and man, did he make up for lost time. 7/16 KRBs in this one game alone. He had to have been a big part in helping Utah return to form, despite the loss of tackle Geoff Keisel, and blow out Phoenix for our game of the year. Our guys played their balls out today, with everything on the line, to earn a week-1 bye....and possibly a #1 seed?! I'm not sure where to check that.

    gg strick.

    Notes:
-We gave rookie RB Nate Washington one more chance today to show he could be the future at RB, and man, he didn't disappoint. All the guy could do was get tackled behind the line before this - nearly 30 carries at a 2.6something ypc rate. Today, though, he made plays - 11 carries, 74 yards. Probably our best day from a RB2 all year long.

-Starting RB Earnest Giang broke the century mark for the 10th time this season with a 31-yard fourth quarter gallop. He finished 23-119 for the day, adding 88 yards on 5 catches, with 3 touchdowns in all (two receiving, incl. a 55-yarder). With that, Giang carries home the League Rushing Trophy this year, ahead of Columbus's Ted Hartman. Hartman, however, has the most Yards From Scrimmage, but nobody cares about that one.

-Randy Boone was near-immaculate today, going 22/28 for 313 yards, 4 TDs, and one unfortunate fourth quarter pick. His 8 INT total for the year was his lowest since 2022. Turns out he may have a solid Avoid INT bar, after all. Randy finishes the year with a respectable 3605 yards passing, 26 TDs, 8 INTs, and a 101.4 rating. He averaged a shade under 27 attempts a game.

The most impressive QB this year, though, has probably been Kurt Poston from Las Vegas. Talk about coming out of nowhere to post the numbers he has, in limited time. I remember when Rip was saddened by the injury to his starter. Well, Poston now owns the league's highest QBR, and he's been doing it in glamorous fashion.

-Tough day for Phoenix in every phase of the game. 5 fumbles, 2 lost. 4 sacks. Hitting familiars by the bottom of the 2nd quarter. Targeted passes to Alfred Morrison defended in coverage by our backup nose tackle. 3rd-and-9, vs pass aggressive dime, running for -4 yards (I've been here before and then some, so I can empathize!)

-Utah won 42-10, with star and leading receiver Alvin Foley contributing 9 yards of offense off of one catch and two targets. Pretty spectacular!

All around, it was a really surprising show of force from a Utah team that has lacked that dominance factor mostly all season long, as we've eked out wins here and there and lost our share. gg strick. Sorry it wasn't a better, more competitive game. Better luck next year, Rico has certainly grown up and become a force in his own right.

Well, I thought I would lay down and roll over in my final game of the season since we were a lock, but when setting up the gameplan I decided I needed to see if I was still able to win without Salinger. Turns out I can. I'm kicking myself for playing it safe the previous two weeks without him. We can still ball.

Biggest surprise is just how damn good my fullback is when running the ball. With Salinger in the game I don't feel the need to give my fullback the ball, but a 4 rush for 50 yards and 2 tds day shows me I'm stupid. He also caught three balls for 41 yards. Wishing we had the automated posts to see if he ended up anywhere.

Anyway, gg Ozias. My pass rush showed up again (though I did sorta decide to crank it up) and once again we kept your two AMAZING receivers under 100 yards. I call that a win regardless.

One sidenote: My kicker, Mr. Rob Krieger, he of 92 accuracy, put together his best season kicking 26 for 26 on the year. Props. He's got a weak leg, but I'm okay with that because I can count on Matt Stover getting it through the uprights every time.

The water gun leaks into the playoffs. We finish 0-3-1 in our last four, but win the division at 8-7-1. Good grief. Ever since our starting RB Dwiggs went down, we have struuuuugled.

7-8-1. Another season where I could foresee 10 wins only to lose some winnable games along the way.

We played an absolute brutal schedule...just another bummer of a year.

              8-8 season.

I feel like we will be a playoff contender next year. Fitzgerald fits our system very well and we have two WR's that he can depend on that are very young and will only get better.

Defensively, we need to bolster our pass rush and our line backers are not getting any younger.

What about Desmond Kinney, 3rd straight year with the most All-purpose yards...man, he gets no love, and finished in 5th APY, in his rookie year.

It was my turn to not show up and play a game....penalties killed me quite often in that one.

                  Good luck in the playoffs.

First off, Las Vegas, I TOLD YA SO.

Secondly, career games for both McBriar and Donaghy got us the win in week 17. We miss the playoffs at 7-9, about 2-3 games short on the wins I expected this year, but we did have some injury problems early on in the season.

I expect to be in the playoffs next year.

Utah: I guess that somewhat controversial Giang trade worked out in the end, eh? :)

Ha! The regular season and the playoffs are two different animals, though.

Yeah! I remember a few people thought I was giving up too much for it. I was really confused by that because I thought if anything, I was getting him on the cheap for a late 1st. But I guess I am more carefree with my draft picks than some ;D

So there it goes. Our worst game of the season, in the most important game of the season. But has been a great season for us. The bad news are that I don't think we can fight for the division next season, key pieces are getting old, and I expect a couple of important guys retiring.
