Actually, from reading the other thread, I see that you are under the 53 player limit. This was a mid week stage so no one would sign, but if you made an offer to a FA and no one outbids you, they will likely sign during the next sim when the week actaully advances.

that was the case, i was outbid. Now my roster is short going into the season. I made another free-agent offer on this turn but wil not be able to utilize him even if he signs. What if it were a position I had to fill?

If you're under the required amount per position to play a game, the CPU would sign someone for you to fill your depth chart.

If your depth chart is filled, you can have as few players as you can get away with and it wouldn't care. You can only have 46 active at one time, anyway, so if you're below 53, it's no big deal.

Check the minimums for each position. I'm not sure where they are, but if you poke around a little, you'll find it somewhere. That's the only thing you need to stay on top of. Whether you have 53, 52, 50, I've seen teams go a season with 48 guys, it doesn't matter. The minimums per position are what matter. Look around. They're in the help files somewhere.

If you offer the contract and then go to release a player, the game will give you the option to only release the player if the FA signs. That's the smart way to do it to avoid this happening.

That was the answer that I was looking for , thanks. I was hesitant to release players without the assurance that I would be able to sign someone to my roster.
