Man I'm glad you are ok. I used to ride motorcycles but gave up interest after the kids came along.

Bikes can be replaced, people can't. Still shitty seeing your bike trashed. Hope your insurance agency are decent and sort things quickly, and that you heal up quickly

They've been pretty good so far, but this is only the second accident I've been in my entire life, so I don't really know what to expect. Last time was a little old lady pulling out of a parking lot without looking and t-boning my car on the way to my last final exam as an undergraduate.

When I have children I might give up riding too, so I'm going to enjoy the year or two I have left. :)

also if you have auto insurance see if you have any kind of PIP Personal injury protection, sometimes you can use that coverage as well form your car policy if your bike policy coverage runs out. also what about the other guy? do they have insurance? also do you carry uninsured/underinsured coverage? again it works different in every state, but SOMETIMES your regular medical WILL NOT pay on an auto accident

No other guy involved, it was debris on the road that caused the bike to lose traction while cornering. I do carry uninsured/underinsured coverage.

There's PIP on my auto policy up to $50,000 but I don't know if they'll carry it over from the separate motorcycle policy. Honestly, even though I'm going to get out of this rather cheaply, I think I might jack up my coverage a little bit on both policies.

They gave me a New York No-Fault Motor Vehicle Insurance Information Form at the hospital, but it is my understanding that New York No-Fault does not apply to motorcycles.

"Motorcycles are not eligible for no-fault coverage, but are required to carry liability and uninsured motorist insurance." as per this guy: http://www.prolaw1.com/about/news/ar...uto-insurance/

again your state may vary but in hawaii your pip coverage applies in any motor vehicle accident, hell i even had a lady file a claim when she fell down in a city bus, and we (used sell for Allstate, now i work for different company in claims) paid it.

ask your auto carrier, if it gets to that point, to file the PIP claim. as far as the under/uninsured coverage wouldnt apply with a single veh incident .

hopefully your bills wont get that high.

wow after a first look NY PIP is better than Hawaii our minimum is only 10k and NY PIP pays for lost wages and stuff. thats fricken awesome!

that being said it seems to have some brutal exclusions, driving drunk etc and apparently the motorcycle thing.

i would still check your individual policy, ask your agent, worse thing that can happen is theyll tell you no. exclusions arent always unilateral. but yeah sounds like your in good hands, no pun intended, heal up rest up get well soon sir!

Thanks for all the advice, strick! I'm a real neophyte when it comes to insurance since I haven't been admitted to a hospital since I was 13, which was 22 years ago! (Obviously, I wasn't handling my own insurance back then!)

Hopefully the "residual medical payments" on my motorcycle policy with the $2000 will cover things, but if not, I'll pursue those options you mentioned.

and heres my good guy strick moment, if your state offers it increase your PIP (personal injury protection) as much as you can afford it, also uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. these coverage protect you against knuckleheads or crazy stuff that happens.

even if you have good medical you may have to go thru an exhaustion of benifits process which can be lengthy

I have $100,000/$300,000 for uninsured motorist on my auto policy. In addition to NY's $50,000 PIP No fault that my carrier provides, I can also buy additional PIP up to $100,000/$2000 WL. (I assume that's "work loss.")

I only have 50,000/100,000 for uninsured motorist on my motorcycle policy, and I should probably jack that one up a little. I think PIP is just not available in NY for motorcyclists and the best I can cover under that is up to $10,000 in "residual medical payments." I only have $2,000 in that now, but maybe I'll increase that too.
