More like we're going with a Rookie QB and are going to suck this year.

We signed everyone we wanted this year and made our cuts early, although now we have the problem of wanting to cut several of the latest UDFA rookies and not really having anybody else to sign to get back up to 70. Aw well.

18 rookies will be headed to UTA camp this year.

            TRAINING CAMP

I've never been one to really play around with these settings (in the past I did the 1 minute special teams thing until I decided that was no good). Last year we took Film Study down to 1 minute in the gambit that it wouldn't really affect Randy Boone, hopefully had no effects other than the potential to lose a formation here or there, and added some time to the other stuff.

This year we're doing the same thing, but concentrating more on the passing game. I like what I saw last season out of Boone, doing more with less than he had in years.

At this point cohesion is really riding on him & Foley regardless of anything — they've been together a long time — and we've lost enough cohesion elsewhere that I don't want to put too much of the spare time back into it. The thinking is I'd rather get one thing great (passing, with already great cohesion) instead of raising say, DL cohesion from average to better than average.

            Totally unscientific, untested, YMMV, etc.

The 1 minute special teams was a con. I used it for dozens of seasons and struggled so much, then I realised why

Until the last month I had always used 4 hours for Pass, defense, and run. I've dropped them to 3:30 now and used the extra time for Training Room.
I play a lot of 100% playing time on some questionable endurance players. I think the extra training may be keeping them from getting more injuries

I've always played 100% PT on everyone, unless for some reason I liked their backup and wanted them to get some decent snaps. The low endurance guys just get taken out on enough plays naturally, I figure there isn't any need to take them out on even more.

I always thought of the PT sliders as more of a personnel decision rather than endurance management.

You must be cutting out of film study and/or cohesion for the extra run time?

Yeh I only run an hour on cohesion. I've never understood how it makes a difference from TC. I thought cohesion was only calculated by years on the roster

How about learning new Formations?? When I had Andrews put every TC in 0:01 due his knowledege but now with Rookies I need more formations... Is enough a 1:15??

I frequently cut film study, but the last few seasons I've had some young QBs so I've left it on. I've done the 1 minute special teams quite a few times, but sometimes I had pretty disastrous results on ST. It wasn't even what you'd think, with tons of blocked kicks/punts, but terrible kickoff distance and coverage. That's what made me stop.

I pretty much keep anyone with decent endurance at 100%, but if I have a low endurance guy who starts getting (Tired) after games, I keep it lower. (Example: Lamar RIvera, my zero endurance safety who has been starting for me for years.)

Boston's TC philosophy is to put time into areas that effect the most players.

Weight Training - Effects the whole roster
Team Activities - Effects the whole roster
Special Teams - Helps on offense AND defense

I did some testing about 6 months ago and I found that if you cut film study too short that you will actually lose formations. I also found that their is defiantly diminishing returns. With your rookie QB I would put film study between 2:00 and 3:00. Anything over 3 hrs doesn't seem to make any significant increase on learned formations.

                            Hope this helps. :)

It seems all that TC info Ben published was dubious. I had thought this would happen but never got any data to back it up in my limited testing
