Detroit, Michigan (OSFL Network) - Officials in the OSFL league office are reporting that the Motor City Mechanics have been purchased by 47 year old business magnate David Miranda Jr. of Richmond, Virginia. The charismatic owner has reportedly long been a fan of the OSFL and wanted desperately to purchase a franchise after a failed bid for Boston several years back.
Miranda has been a busy man the last 3 seasons. He's managed to survive a cheating scandal that rocked Brewers League Baseball and threatened to destroy the integrity of the league. His Virginia Colonials were implicated in a widespread performance enhancement controversy that turned the well respected league on it's head. The "Virginia 9" scandal resulted in 9 players being banned from baseball for life and implicated dozens more, including current BLB Hall of Famer Mel Woodbury.
Somehow Miranda survived the investigation after purging the front office, hiring former Hartford Whaler frontman Bob "umd" Smith as GM and COO, and moving the team from Virginia to Las Vegas, Nevada. Rebranded the Death Valley Scorpions, the team sits atop the BLB standings at 67-25. A remarkable comeback just 2 seasons removed from finishing in last place in the BLB following the upheavel.
It's being reported that Bob "umd" Smith will be named the acting GM of Motor City, pending the completion of the sale. Smith has a record of turning moribound and troubled franchises around, having orchestrated a 10 year revival of perennial losers Hartford in the BLB. Under his direction, the Whalers won 4 division titles and 2 conference championships.
There are rumors Miranda is not done expanding his stake in professional sports, as it's been reported he has expressed interest in purchasing an expansion franchise in the newly launched Brewers Basketball Association. Grantland is reporting the franchise will be located in New Orleans, LA.
