2034 STAFF DRAFT SIM Complete - Next SIM FRI 06/06
Always loved that in OOTP and FOF where retired players get into coaching. In OOTP a guy who made his way up after not being drafted in my minor leagues and appeared in maybe 5 games for me as a relief pitcher eventually ended up being an excellent bench coach for me for a decade+.

Always a neat immersion thing!
You know there's an OOTP league here with an open team, right?
I can cut players all the way until when and still get the cap savings? I'm still learning and don't want to repeat my mistakes. Also, is it worth franchising guys? Or renegotiating with them?

Reneg is always better than franchising, but you're stuck at this point as the players who contracts have expired will be FAs (who you could lose or get into a bidding war over). So, franchise the one player you really want to keep. For me, it was my QB.

OK, so I missed the window to resign anyone pretty much unless they are restricted?
I'm glad I was finally able to fix some of this financial mess.

When you a cut a player, you avoid paying all of his salary. However, you still owe him the bonus he's due this season, which counts as a current-year cap penalty, and any other bonus remaining on his contract, all of which combined counts as a cap penalty next year.
During the season, you can cut a player at any time. However, you will only save a pro-rated part of his salary. The later it is in the season, the less of his salary you will avoid paying and the less the cap relief.
However, in FOF6.4, you could renegotiate a player at any point during the season to a different salary with the same effect. That is, if a guy has been scheduled to be paid $10M in salary and it's Week 17, you couldn't cut him and save anything, but you could renegotiate him down to a $2M salary and it will be as if he were being paid $2M salary all along.
(If he'd accept such a deal, of course) Not sure if that's how it still is.
You have until the bowl week to do contract extensions. At the turn of the new season, everyone year 4 and under who is without contract is Restricted, so you get first crack at them. RFAs become Unrestricted at the start of Late Free Agency (after the draft is entered). Everyone above year 4 is Unrestricted.
