Personally, if I plan on having a guy be at a different position long term, I switch them. If it is a stop gap or definitely only a 1 year plan, I play them out of position.
Edit: I also switch them if there is no significant ratings reduction or experience reduction and I plan on it being a year long plan.
Yeah, sometimes the player will become disgruntled. One thing I do is open the game, change the positions to check on the actual changes and if I don't like what I see, I close the game and reopen it and start all over again.
Depends upon the player and their "experience" at the position that is not their natural position. However, the experience hit and reduced performance can be significant in some situations.

That is a good preview method, but the actual change once the commish processes the file can sometimes be significantly different from that preview.
More injuries playing out of position. Haven't done a study on it. Just anecdotal observations.
The way I look at is is that they practice at their official position all week. If they're versatile, it doesn't matter much, and sometimes I'll try a guy out, say, a SLB at WLB for a few games during the course of a whole season starting or backup, before making the switch official. Easier transition. But they're still playing something that's alien to them in varying levels.
Switching guys back and forth is the worst thing you can do. Destroys them in a lot of cases.
