  • OSFL history

I'd like to learn a bit from the league and bring a bit of life (or controversy) in the game.

    a few question:

Who was the greatest player to ever play the OSFL, no matter his position.

Who's been the biggest overachiever and underachiever in terms of player?

I'll be boring here, and go with QBs for each answer.

For greatest ever, how about one of the original ironmen, San Fran's Rico Whalen? I don't think he was ever injured, and rarely missed a game. In 269 starts in 17 seasons, he was consistently great and leads the OSFL in passing by a mile -- or more like five miles, to be exact, with 73,036 yards. Other strong contenders are Bobby Tubbs (#2 in yards, #1 in QBR, 4 rings) and Randy Boone (easily the winningest, with 8 rings, and famous for losing half a season to tobacco withdrawal...)

For biggest over & underachiever, let's go with QBs taken back to back in the same class. At 1.1, Boston selected Cary Money in 2021, who ended up being about a 33/33 guy at his PEAK. Yet he has nearly 50,000 yards and 140 wins to his name, with a career 91.3 QBR to rival Whalen. From 2027 to 2032, he put together six dazzling seasons in one of the strongest stretches for any QB, and led the Irish to a bowl appearance. He's still in the league, as a backup with Motor City, but would have ended his career in Boston if not for the AI's intervention.

Selected with the 2nd pick that year by Phoenix was the 5'9 wunderkind, Rico "Frodo" Oglethorpe. In ratings, Frodo was pushing 70/70 for most of his career. Many believed in Frodo, and he was given extended looks by four teams. And occasionally, he teased, posting 4000 yards and 31 TDs in his first season in Washington in 2028. Still, his career winning percentage is a mere .392. The contrast with Money is remarkable, given Frodo's vast ratings advantage.

Frodo's made something of a late career resurgence these past two seasons, providing some sharp play for the affinities monster that is Camden. He may get the last laugh over Money, after all. But for a not insignificant amount of time, Money was on top of the world, notching 100+ after 100+ QBR season. Frodo's last full season (2035) was his best ever in QBR, and he still has yet to surpass 90 QBR.

Any success Frodo enjoys this late in his journey is only because Curtis "Samwise" Shae is carrying his hobbit ass. Would'a benched the midget this year if Anderson hadn't (according to my coaching staff at least, the league scout still likes him) fallen apart in training camp.

But as much as I might dislike my own QB my nomination for biggest underachiever instead goes to former Portland QB Eddie Castillo.

Castillo was a #3 overall pick in the draft who did manage to play for 13 seasons, putting up some fairly good numbers early in his career. And while he finished up as Portland's all time leader in all things QB, he will forever be remembered instead in the Rose City for his actions at the end of the 2018 season.

After getting hurt (collarbone!) in week 3 Castillo came back and led the Phantoms on a string of wins. With two games remaining they had pulled to within striking distance division leader Washington and a chance at their third trip to the playoffs in four years. Then it happened.

Immediately prior to their week 16 showdown with the greatest "pre-Utah" dynasty the OSFL had seen, Bobby Tubbs and the Columbus Catfish, Castillo decided he just couldn't do it any more. There was nothing physically wrong with him, but he just wasn't going to take the field. The team doctors labeled it as "Severe Depression. Out. Return: Unknown"

Portland lost that week in a very close 17-10 game. This, combined with a Washington win left the Phantoms with no better hopes than a Wild Card spot and chance that Castillo might return for the playoffs.

But while the Phantoms did manage get their Wild Card, Castillo would have no part of it. He stayed on the sidelines and watched instead as a Robert Sanders a 4th year former 7th round pick who had not even stepped foot onto a field before that season led the team instead to four consecutive road wins and into a championship game rematch with none other than Bobby Tubbs and the Catfish.

Columbus crushed the Phantoms 38-13 and the rest was history.

Robert Sanders threw a grand total of five more passes for the entire rest of his career as the Phantoms front office, fearing a QB controversy, buried the hero of 2018 down their depth chart. Eddie Castillo did eventually come back, but he was never quite the same. His performance was down across the board and he only got worse. The Portland Phantoms never really recovered. In the 18 years since Eddie Castillo "noped" his way into OSFL infamy, the team has has managed exactly one winning season.

I'll throw my guy, CB Shannon Fulton into the mix. In nine seasons so far, he has 58 interceptions and 18 of them have been returned for TD's. Next closest is seven.

        A career 85.6% pass defense.(5th all time)

He's currently 2nd all time in INT's and only three away from tying for 1st.

All time leader in interception return yards with 1186. 407 ahead of 2nd place.

            Must be the patch.

It hasn't been like this since 2014 except for a couple of outliers in 2020.

Hey, I'm happy that Syron & Douglas are both having sensational years.

Ah, that makes sense. I forgot he boosted QB stats a bit to make it more like current NFL since so many people complained. Puts an asterisk next to the records now, for me. Boooooo

We had those guys nailed. I didn't scout Syron but if Douglas wasn't available I was going to take him.

I'm finally using Douglas well. I think some of his struggles were due to poor gameplanning for him on my part.
