Memphis QB Dusty Cowell, though eight starts is working a 74.1 completion percentage and is projected to have 3,900 passing yards this season…which is almost as impressive as QB Corey Lincoln, who is on pace for 4,105 yards, having thrown 22 TDs already in nine starts.
In the ‘Ow, my arm!’ department, Bayhawks QB Daryl Lyle has launched 319 attempts through nine games (over 35 attempts per game), connecting at a pitiable 50.8%. Closely contesting the QB futility race is Nick Pipkin, who’s 317 downfield chucks are being caught 58.4% of the time. Unfortunately, the rest seem to be caught by opposing defenders (15 INTs in 9 games)
But enough about that, back to Dusty: if you think his overall completion percentage is sick, you’d best hope not to be opposing the Grizzlies when he leads them to the Red Zone. “General” Cowell raises his game to a 79.5% completion rate with the end-zone in sight. Amazingly, this is nowhere near Glen Hechts RZ accuracy, checking in at an eye-popping 95% (19 of 20).
From the Trench Warfare desk we find that, based on current results, this season will NOT have a 2,000 yard rusher. The league leader to date is RB Skip Alig with 874 yards in eight starts (4.35 ypc). Less attempts have led to less yards for Boston RB Vince Shapiro but not for lack of trying. Shapiro, through eight games, is carrying a 4.45 ypc average. Overall, the league will be hard pressed to find many double digit TDs from the running game.
Receiving: Ingram, Watanabe, Ingram Watanabe, Ingram, Watanabe, Helfin…sigh….unless it’s in the RZ, then…Ingram, Watanabe, Helfin, Ingram, drop, Helfin, Ingram, Watanabe. Yeah, there’re other receivers with nifty similar stats, but, c’mon, who do you cover?
General notes:
• Pete Swift is averaging 12.9 yards per punt return, but has yet to reach the end-zone on special teams.
• Corwin Thomas likes to kick field goals (29 attempts), he just doesn’t like to make ‘em (20 FG). However he has kicked a 59 yarder and has six 50+ FG this season.
• Tracy Saathoff hasn’t missed a FG this year (20-20).
• WAC kicker Nathan Kellum is just plain bad.
• Yuma’s Otis Vaughn and Anchorage’s R.J. Peterson each have 12.5 Sacks, however Yuma has yet to have their bye week, putting Peterson ahead, on pace for 25 Sacks this year.
• STP defensive back Todd Garcia and WAC defensive back Jermaine Zajac each have one Interception for each start.
• Randy Richardson would like a 55 gallon drum of Stick-em for Christmas
