  • How Was Your Draft '39 Edition

So I figured I'd beat Aston to the punch and get this kicked off. I really liked last year's version. In Washington, we did a lot of wheeling and dealing for quite a few draft picks that will likely hurt us in the long run but we had a lot of fun in the process. We did pick up some depth but I don't really think we got anybody that will change the course of this team.

    Washington

    1 - 21 (21) Julio McIntyre ILB, Notre Dame - TC (+6/-13)
Ouch. Growing pains in drafting I guess. I thought that he'd maintain a 60+ potential rating but it looks like I'm going to have to hope that he can stay above 50 and be an everyday player for us. I'd considering moving him out to the edge as well because I'd prefer to have middle linebacker with a little more size.

    2 - 10 (42) Joshua Hickman FB, Washington TC (+8/+5)
It makes a nice storyline that our best (arguably) pick in the draft is a kid who was a star for the Huskies. He's got the potential to be a do-it-all fullback, a sort of "throwback" player to the style of football I grew up with. If he hits his potential, he'll be a staple to the offense I'm trying to build here in the Pacific NW.

    2 - 12 (42) Chandler Blake T, Alabama TC (+6/-3)
The kid had a nice camp and still finds himself on the "Green Page" even after training camp. He's another guy who has the potential to be impactful in both the run and the pass. Getting Chandler opens up an opportunity to make a few moves on the offensive line that should make us a bit more potent in the run game.

    2 - 20 (54) Gene Reese T, Texas A&M TC (+6/-14)
This kid also had a nice camp but it looks like the coaches don't see him anywhere near the player they thought he'd become. But he's a smart kid and a bit small to play tackle so we are considering a move to center for Gene.

    2 - 22 (56) Chris Stroup S, Michigan St. TC (+5/+3)
If this kid turns out to be the player our scouting team expects, Zion Dobler will finally be able to move permanently back to FS and the trade of our first round pick is totally worth it. He's another smart kid that has the potential to do pretty much everything you'd like your safety to do. His only drawback is his endurance but if he can learn to do everything else, we have no problem giving him a breather here and there.

    2 - 30 (62) Knox Everhart OLB, Virginia TC (+2/-3)
Knox didn't have the best camp, but he still looks like he can be a pretty decent player. I'm not a fan of his 0 M2M rating but he's got good BnR potential and should be a solid run defender one day. Was he worth moving our future second? I think the jury is still out.

    2 - 31 (63) Cris Doyle CB, Auburn TC (+2/-11)
Doyle will be interesting to watch because our scouts believe that Cris took a big dive in potential in camp while the league scout still thinks Cris has what it takes to be a every down corner in this league. He's got good size at 6'1 and 201 lbs for a corner and he's got good potential in M2M and BnR which we tend to play a lot of in Washington.

    3 - 1 (65) Mack McGee CB, Notre Dame TC (+1/-6)
I didn't mean to pick him. He didn't have a great camp. His potential dropped quite a bit. He's only 5'8. He's got a lot of reasons to get cut. He's the second dud I drafted from Notre Dame. Mack has an uphill battle on his hands.

    4 - 22 (42) Daquan Kirk CB, Kansas TC (+3/-14)
I made all this hoopla about this kid and he's a bust. McGee probably has a better chance of sticking around.

    5 - 21 (149) J.C. Viano DE, Temple TC (+3/-1)
Viano was a bit disappointing because I really expect a bit better play recognition from a smart kid like this. However, he does play well against the run and has good motor. He has a chance to stick around for a while.

    6 - 15 (175) Dakota Middleton WR, Nebraska TC (+1/-3)
I was hoping Middleton would make a good possession receiver and he may still fill that role. Not really a big play guy, he can pick up some YAC and has the chance to be a decent option to make the play on 3rd down. I'm not sold on him yet but he is another late pick that has a chance to make the team.

    7 - 21 (149)Darrin Winslett CB, C. Missouri St. TC (+2/-4)
Probably just a good as any of the earlier picks we made at CB, Darren is just a jack of all trades to the position of corner back. He may get his chance but he'll have to prove he is needed in pre-season play.

This is an easy draft for me to grade, as I only made one pick.

      3 - 10 (75) Jack Henderson C, Nebraska - TC (+7/+8)

I was really happy to see Jack fall to us in the third round, as I was eyeballing him in the second round before I traded my picks there away. According to my scouts Jack had one of the best training camps of any rookie in the league. We'll see what happens in Ex2, but for now it looks like I stole a 2nd rounder in the 3rd. Interestingly, the league scout shows him as a 27/43, whereas my staff sees him as 34/54. My staff have better scouting bars than the league scout, so I'm trusting my numbers over his. I just found it interesting.

All of my rookies in the later rounds are showing they'll be at least 40 or so. A lot of them are showing 45 and I'm good with that - that's average and average makes good depth.

But let's get to the part everyone cares about.

Charlie Schultz came out 67/80 from TC. He is ready to bulldoze, and the only member of the team better than him right now is Perez, who is just straight up 80/80.

The LG in round 2 came up 26/67, so he may or may not but in EX2. Lets hope he anchors what may become a deadly line.

Dunno how much this stuff matters until the exhibition reveal, but here we go.

1(17) Grayson Botta TE - +7/-1 (46/74) If this guy holds up he will be a beast.

2(16) Rusty Porter WR - +4/+1 (32/57) A steal if I got a WR like this in round 2. I was very excited he fell to me here. We'll see how he turns out in EX3.

3(15) Dwight Paulsen DE - +3/+1 (19/48) Will be a situational pass rusher if he doesn't wash out. My DEs are a little underwhelming right now and Everett Lindsay is fading fast so he might be forced into a starting role sooner than I want.

4(14) Zack Jeffries FS - +4/-6 (25/41) Ouch. This looks like a swing and a miss. I was actually really excited to nab this guy but it looks like an undrafted free agent I have might have a better chance to make the team than Jeffries.

5(13) Donnell Stephenson G - +4/+0 (31/51) A steal in the fifth round if he holds here. I desperately need some talent at guard too. My o-line is mostly old and mediocre. I considered Stephenson at 4(14). I wanted to trade back in and grab WR Dylan Fulcher but Yuma took him. He went +4/+4 in TC.

6(17) Aidan Grant G +3/-2 (28/45) Auto picked. Whoops. Always leave people in your priority list, folks.

7(16) Kyle Bucy TE +3/-2 (21/39) This guy might end up being serviceable but I have a ridiculous amount of depth at TE right now.

UFA Rickey Hodges FS +2/+5 (18/32) Rickey will most likely make the team in Dakota.

UFA Elliot Hopper C +2/+0 (14/34) Has a future as a reserve center and we're thin there. Might even risk going into the season with him as my primary backup.

UFA Ricky Fields WLB +2/+0 (19/27) I thought this guy might end up being a nice cheap reserve pass rusher, but it doesn't look like he has it in him. We'll see how he does in EX3. There was another pass rusher I wanted more but my budget was a bit tight and I had to let another team have him (WLB Tony Windham.) He looks like quite a find in UFA and I should have freed up a little money for him.

I'm really happy with Jack Henderson's Ex. 2 movement. He boomed for a +18/+34. I had hopes that this guy would blow up, but I was skeptical as I'm wrong a lot more than I'm right. I'm hoping that he holds out and I have an anchor for my O-line for the foreseeable future.

Yeah, a lot of really weird shit is happening. Not sure if it's good or bad for us.

Overall, very happy with the draft. Looks like we may have a future ILB starter, and starter at RB, even though our first draft pick was 4.24. So, here's our draft first, then the weird stuff after.

4.24 ILB Joey Glover. 34/48, +6/+2. Except for 40, had a good combine.
                  5.12 G Aiden Judge. 24/50, +4/-5. Sorta expected.
5.19 CB Joseph McDaniel. 15/31. -1/-28. Moved him from safety. Guess he won't make it. Bad combine, but wanted to give him a try with his initial bars.
5.24 RB Harry Singleton. 39/52. +10/+12. Decent combine, surprised he jumped so much. 95 volatility must have been the difference.
6.11 TE Irving Sims. 25/35. +3/-6. No combine, no surprise.
6.24 WR Ernest Bolerjack. 14/17. -2/-12. Small surprise, but not complete. Got him for his ST bar, but it looks like he'll be deactivated most of this year, if I don't just cut him and find someone new.
7.10 QB Leland Stephenson. 10/33. +3/+1. Should be a good holder and 3rd QB.
7.19 CB Buddy Wormser. 12/30. +1/-5. Had good 40 and PD, and good looking M2M and INT bar. Unfortunately, he didn't hold his M2M bar.
7.24 RB Juan Reilly. 30/38. +2/+2. Surprise here. Not sure which RBs to keep now.

                  Now, for the weird stuff.

Last year's 1.30, ILB Philip Bergeron, up +1/+10. Dropped like a rock last season, jumped up this season, but only took back half of his loss from last season.

Last year's 1.7 pick, S Claude Dugger, dropped -2/-14. He had an amazing combine and has a low volatility. He is at 66/66 with plenty of green left, but this makes very little sense to me.

My other starting safety, my 1.29 pick from 2 seasons ago, Juan Cobb dropped -10/-10. My biggest strength in the secondary were my two 1st round safeties, now Cobb is 42/42. Another guy with a very good combine, but has an 83 volatility. Lots of volatility moves as Nemesis said. Why so many moves in this season?

DE Earnest Knight, who I picked at 2.10 (I usually never pick defensive linemen at 2.10, but I really liked him), had a +3/+8 jump, becoming more of the player I expected him to be...

Finally, 5th year center Gerald Hirschman jumped +12/+12. Another guy with an 83 volatility.

The Cobb drop is the one that REALLY kills me. I'd rather see Hirschman and Cobb stay rather than Cobb dropping and Hirschman booming.

Wondering about why there are so many big jumps this season...

Good campo for the Sharks this season as we took the drops with veterans in contract year, youngers look nice specially our first round RB who crept +4/+6 and is ready to back up Grauman straight away, very happy to have another great back while Grauman is on the twilight of his career. We need to re-tool the OL and the DL soon though

There's lots of (moderate) volatility happening all the time, in my view. Count on players based on past knowledge at your own peril.

                      Boston Rookies

                      TE Stanley Harris 25/37 » 28/36
                      WR Evan Poff 27/41 » 32/49
                      C Lonnie Horner 25/42 » 30/45
                      OT Trey Mathis 21/40 » 26/50
                      DE Jonathan Rice 30/42 » 40/54
                      DT Benjamin Disbro 22/49 » 26/56
                      CB Mel Ochs 41/57 » 49/67
                      LS Alexis Duffy 22/22 » 21/21

This is a nice group. TE Harris is the only one really still fighting for a roster spot on the team. There's not really any star power outside of CB Ochs (so that 2nd round WR is a little disappointing -- Dakota's man a few picks earlier would have been preferable), but a good deal of solid. With 6 non-ST draftees set to make the team, it was a good haul for roster depth.

We're coming out of TC looking a lot more vulnerable than we went in, so we'll need some good play and development from the younger players this year. Better grow up fast.

Ochs may need to play the year at safety to cover up deficiencies in that area. I'd love to move Mathis to guard, as I don't know what I'll do there otherwise -- but it's probably better to keep him at T long term. Disbro can move to end at no penalty but he's going to stick at DT after the lousy camp Knight had.

                          Based on league scout ratings;

                          RB Alan Elliott 36/57 > 37/41
                          TE Frank England 22/33 > 25/31
                          WR Sherman Finley 24/30 > 29/33
                          RG Todd Ames 18/48 > 21/53
                          DE Grayson Carbajal 14/45 > 18/41
                          OLB Heath Hall 45/56 > 53/69
                          FS Pedro Meynardie 15/23 > 16/26

Obviously pleased with Hall's ratings and Ames could become a potential starter. Disappointed with the drop on Elliott as I thought he could become the number one back. B+ in the draft review looks pretty accurate.

                            draft

Outside of our 1st round pick our draft was pretty crappy... But still managed to find some interesting undrafted players...

And in other news, we quietly crept up to the #5 roster rating.

The next movement in Ex3 is bolded.

1(17) Grayson Botta TE - +7/-1 (46/74) (-1/-3) If this guy holds up he will be a beast. The best TE in this class by far is the no combine that Yuma took. I never even checked him out or I might've had the balls to draft Yuma's TE here. Botta should be pretty good too.

2(16) Rusty Porter WR - +4/+1 (32/57) (+2/+2) A steal if I got a WR like this in round 2. I was very excited he fell to me here. We'll see how he turns out in EX3. This guy looks great. He might be starting by mid season.

3(15) Dwight Paulsen DE - +3/+1 (19/48) (0/0) Will be a situational pass rusher if he doesn't wash out. My DEs are a little underwhelming right now and Everett Lindsay is fading fast so he might be forced into a starting role sooner than I want. Everett Lindsay bombed in TC and will be cut. Paulsen might be getting a lot more playing time than I planned.

4(14) Zack Jeffries FS - +4/-6 (25/41) (-1/+8) Ouch. This looks like a swing and a miss. I was actually really excited to nab this guy but it looks like an undrafted free agent I have might have a better chance to make the team than Jeffries. Well, I guess Jeffries is sticking around after all and projects as a future starter at safety. I have a feeling he took a tire iron to the knee of that UFA safety. :)

5(13) Donnell Stephenson G - +4/+0 (31/51) (+0/+2) A steal in the fifth round if he holds here. I desperately need some talent at guard too. My o-line is mostly old and mediocre. I considered Stephenson at 4(14). I wanted to trade back in and grab WR Dylan Fulcher but Yuma took him. He went +4/+4 in TC. Still a steal and will be a future starter at G for us. Looks like we did pretty well in this draft.

6(17) Aidan Grant G +3/-2 (28/45) (-1/-4) Auto picked. Whoops. Always leave people in your priority list, folks. Probably will not make the team. Can't pass block and dropped in two ratings checkpoints.

7(16) Kyle Bucy TE +3/-2 (21/39) (-1/-6) This guy might end up being serviceable but I have a ridiculous amount of depth at TE right now. Well that will make the TE situation easier to sort out.

UFA Rickey Hodges FS +2/+5 (18/32) (-1/-5) Rickey will most likely make the team in Dakota. Rickey will definitely not make the team in Dakota.

UFA Elliot Hopper C +2/+0 (14/34) (+0/-2) Has a future as a reserve center and we're thin there. Might even risk going into the season with him as my primary backup. Meh. Maybe he'll stick maybe he won't.

UFA Ricky Fields WLB +2/+0 (19/27) (+0/+1) I thought this guy might end up being a nice cheap reserve pass rusher, but it doesn't look like he has it in him. We'll see how he does in EX3. There was another pass rusher I wanted more but my budget was a bit tight and I had to let another team have him (WLB Tony Windham.) He looks like quite a find in UFA and I should have freed up a little money for him. He barely moved overall but his PRT bar did (38 PRT to 60 PT). He'll make the roster now. I noticed one of the 1st round OLBs (I think Heath Hall) lost a lot of PRT but gained in other areas, making him more of a decent "normal" LB as opposed to a pass rusher. Learning new stuff about FOF7 every day...
