So I figured I'd beat Aston to the punch and get this kicked off. I really liked last year's version. In Washington, we did a lot of wheeling and dealing for quite a few draft picks that will likely hurt us in the long run but we had a lot of fun in the process. We did pick up some depth but I don't really think we got anybody that will change the course of this team.
Washington
1 - 21 (21) Julio McIntyre ILB, Notre Dame - TC (+6/-13)
Ouch. Growing pains in drafting I guess. I thought that he'd maintain a 60+ potential rating but it looks like I'm going to have to hope that he can stay above 50 and be an everyday player for us. I'd considering moving him out to the edge as well because I'd prefer to have middle linebacker with a little more size.
2 - 10 (42) Joshua Hickman FB, Washington TC (+8/+5)
It makes a nice storyline that our best (arguably) pick in the draft is a kid who was a star for the Huskies. He's got the potential to be a do-it-all fullback, a sort of "throwback" player to the style of football I grew up with. If he hits his potential, he'll be a staple to the offense I'm trying to build here in the Pacific NW.
2 - 12 (42) Chandler Blake T, Alabama TC (+6/-3)
The kid had a nice camp and still finds himself on the "Green Page" even after training camp. He's another guy who has the potential to be impactful in both the run and the pass. Getting Chandler opens up an opportunity to make a few moves on the offensive line that should make us a bit more potent in the run game.
2 - 20 (54) Gene Reese T, Texas A&M TC (+6/-14)
This kid also had a nice camp but it looks like the coaches don't see him anywhere near the player they thought he'd become. But he's a smart kid and a bit small to play tackle so we are considering a move to center for Gene.
2 - 22 (56) Chris Stroup S, Michigan St. TC (+5/+3)
If this kid turns out to be the player our scouting team expects, Zion Dobler will finally be able to move permanently back to FS and the trade of our first round pick is totally worth it. He's another smart kid that has the potential to do pretty much everything you'd like your safety to do. His only drawback is his endurance but if he can learn to do everything else, we have no problem giving him a breather here and there.
2 - 30 (62) Knox Everhart OLB, Virginia TC (+2/-3)
Knox didn't have the best camp, but he still looks like he can be a pretty decent player. I'm not a fan of his 0 M2M rating but he's got good BnR potential and should be a solid run defender one day. Was he worth moving our future second? I think the jury is still out.
2 - 31 (63) Cris Doyle CB, Auburn TC (+2/-11)
Doyle will be interesting to watch because our scouts believe that Cris took a big dive in potential in camp while the league scout still thinks Cris has what it takes to be a every down corner in this league. He's got good size at 6'1 and 201 lbs for a corner and he's got good potential in M2M and BnR which we tend to play a lot of in Washington.
3 - 1 (65) Mack McGee CB, Notre Dame TC (+1/-6)
I didn't mean to pick him. He didn't have a great camp. His potential dropped quite a bit. He's only 5'8. He's got a lot of reasons to get cut. He's the second dud I drafted from Notre Dame. Mack has an uphill battle on his hands.
4 - 22 (42) Daquan Kirk CB, Kansas TC (+3/-14)
I made all this hoopla about this kid and he's a bust. McGee probably has a better chance of sticking around.
5 - 21 (149) J.C. Viano DE, Temple TC (+3/-1)
Viano was a bit disappointing because I really expect a bit better play recognition from a smart kid like this. However, he does play well against the run and has good motor. He has a chance to stick around for a while.
6 - 15 (175) Dakota Middleton WR, Nebraska TC (+1/-3)
I was hoping Middleton would make a good possession receiver and he may still fill that role. Not really a big play guy, he can pick up some YAC and has the chance to be a decent option to make the play on 3rd down. I'm not sold on him yet but he is another late pick that has a chance to make the team.
7 - 21 (149)Darrin Winslett CB, C. Missouri St. TC (+2/-4)
Probably just a good as any of the earlier picks we made at CB, Darren is just a jack of all trades to the position of corner back. He may get his chance but he'll have to prove he is needed in pre-season play.
