Cap Penaltys

I have never had a Cap penalty so unsure how it works, all I know is you lose a future draft pick. If someone could explain how this is applied it will be appreciated. Amount over the Cap, how many picks lost, what round etc. Going to try not to get penalized but I may be looking at my 1st penalty.

If you are over the cap when the FA2 finish you will lose a 3rd Round pick next year. It doesn't happen if yiu are over the cap after extending a player or signing one (if the offer goes through) during the regular season
