Just tried "send test email" (seemed to work -- if several minutes late) via the "mail" method. I changed the admin email to mine to test it, and maybe it requires a gmail address in this field or something? Don't know; in any case the choice of email to put here isn't important. Hopefully future emails will go out now.

I also tried testing using "sendmail" and ... ka-boom. So I think that was possibly the cause of that. Unfortunately, my impression is just that "Sending Email" reliably is not something we as the FOF community are capable of getting working. Between different server setups and the software. It's certainly not my area of expertise.

The database also went down for maybe ~30minutes today. That is a hopefully unrelated server hiccup.

To answer the "Is there an alternative", I believe the answer is no. Regardless, it's not the draft utility, that hasn't changed and code isn't temperamental :) , so it's normally associated with the hosting provider changes or latency/outages.
