  • What Have You Learned?

Now that most of us have multiple seasons under our belt... I'm interested to know what people think they've learned about the game. Do you think you understand it any better? Have you figured out gameplanning to the point where you feel like your gameplan effects the outcome on the field? How much do you tweak to a matchup? Have you found an offensive gameplan that is your "style"?

In a broader score, do you feel like you're in charge of your team's performance on the field... or are you just putting the pieces together?

I feel like I've learned a ton... but not from the game itself... I've learned a lot from reading FOFC and trying things out with spreadsheets. That's how I taught myself gameplanning.

Just running sims for 10 years and taking stats and figuring out what does what.

I do think I've also learned how to be a slightly better drafter as the years have gone on.

The other big thing that has really helped me is being in 3 different leagues. Learned a lot, quickly that way.

As for gameplanning. I definitely think the way my defense plays is a direct representation on my gameplanning skills... as for offense, I don't really have a clue if the game listens to what I want to do or not.

I am the exact opposite there. I feel My gameplanning on offense makes a difference, but on defense I feel like it is a crap shoot most of the time.

I think I'm a happy mixture between you too. I KNOW my whole game has gotten better, drafting, offensive gameplanning, and a a lower level, defensive gameplanning. I attribute my success to FOFC and the other two leagues that I participated in. Both leagues are full of sharks that have been playing FoF since the beginning of time and didn't hold back against the new guy. I think the biggest thing I learned was to gameplan based on my QB's performance and not his bars. Defensively, I've done the same thing, but somehow it doesn't translate nearly as well as I'd like it to.

I'm almost purely in GM mode, just let HAL do my gameplanning. This preseason I've been trying out some of Skydog's packaged offensive gameplans (West Coast O). I noticed that when I just press recommend, HAL chooses very similar percentages to the packaged West Coast....so I'll roll with that. Also, I feel that I've had above average success in the draft. I basically just pay WAY more attention to the bars then the combine numbers and think that is a good way to at least draft serviceable, average players later on in the draft.

In this league and the other leagues I am in, I have learned that testing gameplans in SP seems to translate fairly well to MP- I have found a couple fairly consistent defensive gameplans, a slew of offensive plans, and several drafting strategies that have started to serve their purposes as I had envisioned after about 20-25 seasons of MP football.. SP has become more of a training ground and theory testing lab since I have gotten into this league and others, but I have yet to lose any of my initial interest in the game or in learning more and getting better.

I like that we as players have been left to develop strategies that work and have had to learn new strategies constantly to stay on top.. I feel like Bill Walsh every time I sit down to play FOF.

Drafting = No clue. I used to go off of bars and scouts impressions, then I started going more off of combine numbers...neither has really brought much success.

Offensive gameplan = I feel this is my strongest skill in FOF. Even with marginal talent on offense for years, I always have a solid running game and effecient passing game. I'm good at changing my gameplan for specific players.

Defensive gameplan = I'm lost. I usually have a better ranked defense then offense, but I have a lot of talent on this side of the ball.

I've learned that you need an above average QB to be successful and secondly a strong DE makes Defense pretty easy --- As I've never had any of those it makes it a little hard...

An above average QB makes things easier, but you can win without one as long as you have good pieces around your QB. Also, some QBs who may look average or below average may have the right bars to fit a certain system and they do well in that.

I'll stand by what I said as a truism about 90% of the time....

almost all of the top teams are 70+ Qbs (Utah has a 54 rated overachiever)

almost all of the bottom teams are 55 and below (Clay at MC has a 80 rated so not sure what his problem is (jk) --)

6th highest completion percentage and the 3rd highest 3d conv. % isn't exactly average and actually strengthens the argument----he's obviously an overachiever....

Is he an overachiever or is he the product of gameplanning and the talent around him?
