OSFL 2011: Year of the Cornerback?
Its almost that time of year again. Break out you fantasy football tables, charts, graphs, and grab a beer. This year, we take a look at the top ten players from this year's draft and take a look inside to see the coveted "draft potential." Everyone would love to have a player that comes in and makes a super impact like the 2010 Rookies of the Year, Charlotte's Sedrick Thompson, or Yuma's Tracy Sneller. However, for most rookies, there's a dreaded learning curve, the transition from the college game to the professional level, that can seriously hamper full potential development. Today we'll go over the teams with the Top Ten OSFL "Potential" Picks.
#10
Sam Logan(CB), Nebraska, 5'8, 185lbs
2011 #10 Overall Pick
-Don't let the small size fool you. This guy is the real deal, as far as OSFL scouts are concerned. This former Cornhusker was the first cornerback chosen in the draft and has the talent to overcome his small stature. It was a slightly puzzling pick by the Stingrays, however, as they are already stacked with talent at cornerback with veteran corner, Mel Ingram, 2009 DPOY Dusty England, physical corner and punt returner, Rich Coles, 2nd year man, Vince Wagner, and a solid backup, Deion Dillon. All of these guys are likely to be shining stars in the coming years, however, someone will have be the odd man out with this much talent in at corner.
-Weaver smothered the best that the Big East had to offer at wide reciever, game after game. However, Weaver was considered a bit soft for his size at corner, because tended to shy away from punishing the opposition on poorly thrown balls. Whether it was an opportunity to make a big hit on a reciever or making the interception, Weaver seemed to play the reciever well, but didn't take the extra step. North Liberty was in dire need of a top tier corner after losing 3rd year corner, Daryll Whitfield to a severe achilles tendon tear last year.
-Mathis is the real deal. Excluding maybe a kicker, Mathis is likely the most "OSFL-ready" player in the draft. Mathis has the speed, strength, agility, smarts to be one of the OSFL's best corners. Playing in the SEC against former college standout's like, Denver's Jerome Bennett or Portland's Gene Burton has honed Mathis to be a likely OSFL star. Some Charlotte Cougars fans consider this rookie to be the defensive back in the Cougars' training camp, despite not playing a day in the OSFL.
-Lenny is one of those guys you would like to call a "tweener." He's a bit smaller than you would prefer at linebacker, and a bit slower than you'd prefer for a safety, but he's makes it all up in heart. Prescott caused havoc in the Big 12, and raised his stock by having an awesome combine and a high work ethic. Lenny is 1 of 34 new faces in the Portland training camp.
-No, not that Sullivan. This Sullivan will do more than talk about your star BLB player. Zack is a silent assassin who loves to win football games, despite not talking a lot in the lockeroom. He's nearly mastered the bullrush in college, taking out quite a few Big 12 quarterbacks in the process. This is the 2nd player that we've seen in our list for Charlotte, as if the NC South wasn't already competitive enough.
