I learned today that the game considers 3rd and 3 to be "3rd and Long" on defense. Fun!

There are so many little adjustments that could be made to defense to make it manageable. As it is there seem to be too many "eh, that's good enough" decisions that won't be fixed in this version that renders defensive gameplanning tiresome and unfun. Just use 'normal' defensive sets when it's medium yards to gain on 3rd down! I should be able to sit in Cover 4 on 3rd and 15 without having to also play it on 3rd and 3. And of course every game I wind up praying that my defensive coordinator doesn't inexplicably switch to a goal line or 1-high defense during the two minute drill, that seems like another easy fix - give the defense the same dedicated "2 minute" section that is given to the offense, or else always use the 3rd/Long choice... nothing super complicated, just little things that make the defensive side of the ball feel less arbitrary and flat.

I'm just a point and click gameplanner. Always have been. Hire the staff, draft the players, install the playbooks with the play style you like (smashmouth for me) and just let the game do it's thing.

I more or less do that as well. I will only tweak the defense to ensure my players om in the most ideal defensive set (cover, m2m, etc). On offense, I tend to throw in a run for third and long. I started doing this because I kept getting sack or throwing INT. I have made 3rd and 8 running the ball. It certainly reduced the number of turnovers and catastrophic field position.
