  • 2011 Week 8 OSFL Wrap-up

    Week Eight

    Top Five

    1. Phoenix Riders (6-1) - Bye Week - LW #2
Not much to report on here. The bye comes at a perfect time for the Riders. Recently acquired quarterback Carl Reese took full advantage of the extra practice time to get more comfortable in the new offense. This team was arguably the leagues best before the acquisition. If Reese can raise his game to the level that many expect, the Riders are the team to beat the rest of the way. Next week they host the (3-4) Motor City Mechanics. Reese should have a solid day against the poor Mechanic pass defense.

    2. Baltimore Bulls (7-1) - W 31-13 over Las Vegas Outlaws - LW #1
After losing 20-27 to the (6-1) Camden Cutters, the Bulls wanted to prove they were still one of the best teams in the OSFL. They slaughtered the Outlaws. Next week the Bulls are on a much-needed bye. Defensive captain MLB Riddick Melton is hurt with a sprained knee. He should be ready after the bye to face the (2-5) Boston Fighting Irish.

    3. St. Paul Bandits (7-1) - W 28-6 over Chicago Reapers – LW #4
The Bandits have now won seven straight. On Sunday quarterback Dusty Galloway threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns. Not all good news over the weekend however, word out of St. Paul says that left corner Kurt Howard will likely miss next weeks game. They travel to the (2-6) Gainesville Gaels, who haven't won since week three. Howard won't be needed.

    4.Camden Cutters – (6-1) - W 41-10 over Brooklyn Hitmen - LW NR
This squad has been overlooked all season. You could even make the case that they are the leagues best. Their week seven win at South Maryland might be the biggest win, for any team, of the season. The Cutters have the best defense in the entire OSFL. They will be overlooked no more. Next week they travel to San Fransisco to face the (5-2) Bayhawks.

    5. New Orleans Stingrays (6-2) - W 28-21 over Anchorage Gladiators - LW NR
Lead by quarterback Ellis Wynn (yet again), the Stingrays beat a formidable Gladiators squad. Wynn is second in the league in passing yards, and on Sunday he proved why, throwing for 310, completing a season-high 83% of his passes. Next week they face the (2-5) Port City Steam. Expect Wynn to air it out yet again.

    Bottom One
    1. Charlotte Knights - L 14-30 to Dakota Totems
The only defeated team left. The Knights next two games are against the (2-5) Chicago Reapers and the (2-6) Gainesville Gaels. If they are going to win a game this season, don't be shocked if it happens soon.

    Game of the Week
I missed out on doing last weeks preview game, so.... N/A.

Week Nines "Game of the Week" features two non-playoff contenders. Voted as one of the leagues top rivalries, the (1-7) Portland Phantoms travel to face the (3-5) Washington Bombers. These teams hate each other. Last season the Bombers dominated the Phantoms, outscoring them 76-10, in the two victories.

    Player Spotlights
This weeks offensive spotlight is on Columbus Catfish Running Back Darnell Wilkens. The leagues leading rusher, already with 1,007 yards, ran for 179 in the 34-32 victory over Gainesville. The third-year runner out of Boston College, has quickly transformed into one of the leagues best rushers. After just 39 career games, he now has 4,269 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns.

This weeks defensive spotlight is on San Fransisco Bayhawks Defensive End Larry Garcia. Going into Sunday's game, the third-year veteran had 11 career sacks in 36 games. On Sunday he had three sacks in the 34-7 massacre over Boston.

    Extra Points
    1. Sorry for the missed week guys. Been a crazy week.
    2. Last seasons NC Champions, Yuma, have fallen to 3-4 on the season. Last seasons Stevens Cup winner, Lake County, is 4-3.
    Wilmington Wildcats- 2057-
    Seattle Pilots- 2017-2041
    Washington Bats - 1979-2013
