3 yrs in the league. 3 yrs over 1100 yds. Only two players have rushed for more yardage in a season than what Perkins ran for in 2011 (1777 yds). So why is Fernando Perkins a free agent? First, while his stats are great...his ratings arent. Most scouts have him rated no better than a slightly above average RB. Second, Its apparent that the Phoenix front office feels that they can throw any RB into its high powered offense and have that RB run for over a thousand yards. 3rd, Phoenix is cap strapped and already has WR Slade, DB Korinek and QB Slade signed to expensive long term deals. That all adds up to a Second Team all Pro RB ending up an unsigned unrestricted FA.
So why is who signs Perkins? Portland is a candidate and has offered him a 4yr, 36 mil dollar offer. Portland is 24 mil under the cap but will need around 11-4 to sign its draftees. The Phantoms should have enough to offer Perkins more if needed. The question remains if Perkins wants to go from the league's best team to one of the league's worst.
Charlotte offered a 3yr, 33 mil contract which is the best offer so far. The problem is the Knights at 10 mil over the cap and have only signed one draftee. It will be interesting to see if Perkins is willing to accept a contract thats extremely backloaded. Also what does this say about Sedrick Thompson's future with the Knights. Many scouts believe that Thompson is a better back than Perkins and the reason he doesnt have fantastic numbers is because of their poor line. I'll be interetsed to see if the Knights' bid remains the same after they sign their #1 draft pick Jeremy Camileri.
Gaines ville has a 4yr, 30 mil offer on the table. That amount isnt going to get Perkins but they have 13 mil under the cap and all their draftees signed so all of that money could potentially go to Perkins. The Gaels dont have a winning record but at 7-9 and in a potentially weak division, that could entice Perkins to sign there.
