Most teams have played five games...some have played just four...but how is everyone feeling at the 1/4 - 1/3 mark of the season?
Portland Phantoms (2-3)
Loss @ (3-2) Anchorage 24-38
Won @ (4-1) Gainesville 33-20
Won vs. (1-3) Utah 35-23
Loss vs. (3-1) Waco 17-20
Loss @ (4-1) Memphis 35-42
If the playoffs started today, four of my five opponents would be in. That is a very tough opening schedule, especially considering my three road opponents are a combined 11-4. So I can't complain too much about a 2-3 record. I expected to be anywhere from 8-10 wins this year, so I got my work cutout for me.
Offensively
Feel great about where my passing game is. Eddie Castillo is the #1 QB in the league based on position score. Seems like everytime he throws the ball it's a 15 yard first down. My line is protecting him well and I have multiple players getting involved in the passing game. My trio of wideouts and TE all have 15+ catches, 200+ yards and at least one TD.
The running game is another story. John Chart is on pace for another 1,000+ yard season, but behind him there really isn't much going on. Not a lot of scoring by the backs. Not a lot of big plays. A three yard run here, a two yard here, a six yard here, etc. Effective but far from spectacular. I have started getting FB Wally Fulton involved in the running game and will expand his role as the season goes long if he succeeds.
Defensively
Awful. Just awful. Last in yards. Last in points. My pass defense has been better then rushing, but far from good. I might switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 here sooner than later but it might not matter what scheme I run...these guys just aren't that good. In the off-season I need to really revamp this squad. Average runningbacks are having career days against me week after week.
Special Teams
Also bad. My punter is one of the leagues best, but the rest of the special teams has been poor. My kicker is 4/7. While he hasn't really cost me a game just yet, if he kicks 50% for much longer, I will bring in someone else. My PR/KR Donald Tatum had been solid through the first portion of the year...and then this week he lost two fumbles on returns that cost me the game. He will be replaced if it happens again.
Rest of the Way (prediction)
@ (2-3) Kalispel Loss
vs. (4-1) New Orleans Loss
@ (2-2) Port City Win
vs. (0-5) Washington Win
vs. (3-2) Anchorage Win
Bye
vs. (2-3) Charlotte Win
@ (5-0) Lake County Loss
@ (1-4) Morgantown Win
@ (0-5) Washington Win
vs. (4-1) Columbus Loss
vs. (2-3) Kalispel Win
I play some really good teams still, NOS, ANC, LC, and CLB. I also have WAS twice and Morgantown, those should be three easy wins. I predicted anywhere from 8-10 wins this season and I still think that is where I will end up. According to my prediction, I will end up at 9-7. I don't think that will be good enough to win the division nor to land one of the wild card spots. This team has enough offense to compete with anyone and such a terrible defense and special teams that anyone can compete with us.
