Is it weird to be excited about a FA punter signing? I swear the biggest upgrade we were able to make in the offseason was signing Mel Baker to punt for us. It was such a weakness last year as field position was consistently flipped against us.

I've been keeping a close eye on Baker during the preseason:

    Game 1: 4 punts | 47.0 avg | 36.0 net | 1 In20
    Game 2: 5 punts | 56.8 avg | 46.6 net | 2 In20
    Game 3: 3 punts | 55.0 avg | 41.0 net | 2 In20
    Game 4: 7 punts | 48.9 avg | 46.1 net | 4 In20

    More of Games 2 - 4 please.

Last year our punter produced: 77 punts | 41.2 avg| 36.3 net | 22 In20 which placed us easily in the bottom 1/4 of the league in punting across the board.

Offensively, we're a mess. Averaging 12-13 points a game, turnovers are awful (2-3 a game).

Defensively, not terrible. 21/58 on 3rd downs is nice, including one game only allowing 1/12.

Penalties are killing us, averaging 6/game (accepted - there've been plenty more).

But hey, it's preseason. Can't wait for kickoff. :D

Very interesting statline from 2 on-the-bubble QBs:

        Tracy Benton 27/34-257-TD-2INT 83.4 (2 sacks - 13
        Ron March 5/5-47-0-0 105.8 (1 sack - 6)

March is 39/39 and one of my FA QB acquisitions, while Benton is my 7th round pick that I released, then re-signed and sits at 7/25.

Not too much to read into - I'm sure Columbus was as vanilla as I was, but pretty impressive completion percentage out of these guys, operating without our top 2 WRs, top TE, and 3 OL starters.

Benton likely sticks as the 3rd-string while Jon Soriano is probably on his way out.

Costly preseason game. Backup RB Tom Benson out for the season. Starting C Jay Kinney, a guy I love, out for 10 weeks. Already lost starting DT Ray Barrett for 8 weeks and lost G Barry Copeland last season and he's hurt through the end of the year.

Oh well. Humphries was great in his first complete game. The offense overall looked great. Looking forward to next week.

I think Mel Baker was on the punx a few years back --- temper your enthusiasm

I think you might have him confused with someone else? His profile shows 4 years with BOS then 3 with DAK.

                      :)

OUCH, I just learned a pretty painful lesson in changing positions. When they say a guy is going to keep 65% of his current stats, they really mean it, even if it doesn't show much decrease after changing it myself, it will after the sim is run.

Really, really ouch. I messed up a 56/56 center BADLY, and I think I took a lot out of my climbing 2nd-year RT Tyrus Hutton. On the other hand, moving 4th-round T Michael Huffman to G scored him +8 in potential and it looks like a good hit in this past year's draft.

sorry about that --- in one league I went through 4 punters in one season -- they tend to blur together

T to G is one of the few that usually works out well --

Yeah, T -> G, G -> C, usually ok. The other way is very very upstream, as well as RT -> LT. Almost always better to just play them out of position, IMO.

And yeah, always trust the percentage it tells you more than the bars. Sorry to hear about it.
