  • 2017 Draft - What'd Ya Get?

Should be a very interesting camp with this bunch; only the 6th-round safety has a volatility lower than 79. Our first round pick, 99.

1.26 - WR Tito Webb (34/49) - This team is in desperate need of playmakers. Webb runs a 4.37, high agility, and looks like a good kick returner to boot. His BPR makes him look like a legit deep threat.

2.25 - ILB Alfred Enochs (30/72) - Was looking more for an OLB, but just had to take Enochs. Apart from his PRT, looks like a total stud with 3 blues and a red. Depending how the numbers shake out, may move Sponable to OLB.

3.24 - QB J.T. Eisenbart (16/56) - Total stab at a project. May be a decent young backup, or may wash out in camp. No idea here.

4.23 - DT J.C. Flynn (21/30) - Another flyer, based pretty much solely on a decent PRS.

    5.26 - P Luke Kramer (46/66) - Quality punter for a low 5th round pick, I'm ok with that.

6.25 - S Jared Betancourt (24/56) - Looks pretty good for a low 6th especially. Has the tweener size to maybe move to a CB position. Should be a contributor in some fashion.

7.24 - WR Gino Vaughn (27/41) - Hm. Not sure why I picked him, but probably because of the PR skills.

Barring disastrous TC results... Webb and Enochs start. Eisenbart, Flynn, and Vaughn will be fighting for roster spots. Kramer is our punter. Betancourt looks like a very solid backup. Not a bad round-up for such low-round picks.

Heh, Jughead, remember last year when you snatched your future starter at FB in the 6th round two spots before I wanted to take him? It's funny, 'cause your 1st and 2nd round choices were players I was deciding between - as in it was down to them and the guy I took. Once I saw you take them, boy was there some second guessing...

1.23 - WR Alvin Foley - Utah needs a receiver under the age of 45 badly. Traded down from 21, I liked him for his combine, although there are some question marks (endurance, avoid drops). Re-entered the draft so I have some sense of how he'll be. Hopefully he'll soften the blow of Danny Viola's retirement.

2.20 - QB Rico Dietz - Time to look for the future at QB. Foy is a retread by now and Ellis Wynn is on his last hurrah by all looks of it. William Chandler, a risk but intriguing prospect, was taken at 2.16, and Dietz is a less exciting QB. But it was Dietz in the 2nd, or another year of no QBs. I don't fall in love with QBs easily (Jughead's still snickering at my trade for Leo Snyder), but I like Dietz passably.

3.19 - OLB Johnnie Higgs - Guys like C Ethan Chester, OLB Monty Lester, and DE Allen Shaw were off the board. So we went with the guy at the serious need position with a red bench press and high position drill. Along with last year's rising 4th round OLB Cole Vinson, it's yet another position, the youth movement of which I hope to have started.

4.14 - CB Richie Ingram Funny story about the trade up with Yuma. Originally the deal was to swap 6th round picks, allowing Utah to move up 12 spots or so. Yuma agreed to this the same time that Utah offered to cancel the 6th round swap. Me and my big mouth! In the end, Utah moved up four spots to secure our top remaining target at cornerback. Was originally looking at Percy Cotter. Hopefully I won't regret this. If he can play a role early in the Nickel or Dime, I'd be happy. The CB position is going through upheaval.

5.13 - RB Brent Kinney It was between Kinney and WR Rex Beers here; with Beers gone, that made the decision easy. Like the guy and hope he'll make an impact in the passing game or on special teams early.

6.22 - S Chester Foster A smart, solid-sized safety that excelled in his position drill. A flier - but if he doesn't pan out, at this point, no harm no foul. With 92 volatility, he has a small chance of booming, which helped his case along with good bars.

7.21 - OG Max Mills A last-round flier for an interior lineman. Unlikely he'll stick at guard; could be moved to center, where we have a need on the line. He'll have an uphill battle to stay on the roster, but Kelvin Irwin's not getting any younger.
    Float likeabutterflysting likeabee.

As I'm friggin clueless over here -- I didn't even know the draft had started --- I missed the big headline (actually there wasn't any) --- my point is TITO would have been taken by me -- instead the AI took a friggin DE...

      this sucks...

Sorry dude. I'd be pretty frustrated too if I missed the draft. There wasn't as much talk about it this year with the drop in ownership so I can see how it was overlooked, but there was a sticky announcing the Draft Utility was live:

          1.12 RB Burt Newman
Newman is a player we wanted to trade up and grab last year, but couldn't get it done. I had thought about staying put at 1:23 and hoping that RB Kendrick Rose (who my scout had as Underrated to Newman's Overrated) fell to us, but when the chance came to move up we had to take it.

          3.25 LT John Buhner
Eleven year vet Devin Lofton has been playing out of position at LT for us since I took over the team, it is about time I started looking for a replacement. Not much chance he'll step into a starting roll this year, but his drafting likely means long time Cutter LT Rufus Ellison is out of work.

          5.23 LB Lee Gillespie
Former Defensive Player of the Year Trent Woodfield and this year's big free agent singing Omar Smith will have my starting outside linebacker spots locked down, but both my backups are a getting long in the tooth. Gillespie will likely get moved to the weak side to take advantage of his pass rush abilities.

          6.26 RB Floyd Steele
I would have liked to get Ian Webster here, but he went 6.12 to Yuma. Steele doesn't look to be anything special but if he can hold his current bars he might end up replacing former 1st round pick Alan Weber for less money.

          7.25 CB Hardy Philcox
I've had some luck with my 7th round picks the last few years, but probably not this year. If Philcox makes the team it'll be as a return man.

I’m not sure how long Newman would have lasted, but I ended up taking Rose at 1.22 so if Newman had been off the board prior to my pick you definitely wouldn’t have landed Rose. The interesting scenario would have been if both Newman and Rose had been there at 1.22, I honestly don’t know which one I would have selected. In the end (fingers crossed), I’m pretty happy we ended up with Rose.

              2.21 - Stan Conrath - S
He is a big safety at 6'1 231. Probably would benefit from losing a few pounds actually. According to his bars and combine, he looks like he could be pretty special. The highest rated safety by far in the entire draft at a need position. He had the only red agility score and a blue sole score and the highest (blue) position specific drill score. Leads me to believe that he should be very good in run support, zone, play diagnosis and interceptions. He won't bring much as far as man-to-man coverage and despite his size he isn't a very big hitter. He will see immediately playing time, likely at both safety spots behind starters Thurman Joyner and Ray Kohberger.

              2.31 - Bob Benton - C
A draft re-entry. Never drafted one of these guys before but last year he was something like 45/75, so I'm hopeful that he is solid. Both my centers left in Free-Agency so Benton could come in and play right away. His endurance will be low...the question is, how low.

              3.31 - Dale Forbes - G
Great combine. Good bars. Good size. I already have four young developing guards on the roster but I think some, and maybe even Forbes, will be moved to other positions, C/T. Plus, Forbes is very lowly developed (16%), so the prospects of him playing this year are slim to begin with. Could be a project but he has the ability.

              4.31 - Clarence Wiltz - CB
He had a blue score in all his combine workouts besides bench press and broad jump. But I think he might be a steal at this point. He should be great in man coverage, zone, run defense, play diagnosis and he looks to have high endurance. Sure he won't be any good in bump and run nor a punishing hitter, but I like the pick.

              5.31 - Mickey Crutchfield - G
Good combine. Average bars. Might have an endurance problem. Might not make the roster. Wasn't a need position but I think he could benefit from a move to Center, where I do have depth issues.

              6.31 - Ken Watkins - WR
Blue scores in 40, sole and agility. Had a poor bench press and average position score, but for a late 6th round pick, I'll take it.

              7.31 - Bobby Jacobs - CB
Almost Mr. Irrelevant, actually has a shot to make the roster. I have big-time depth issues at CB and Jacobs had a decent combine. One of the few blue scores in 40 time for corners and a high position score. His bars are downright awful, but he could surprise.

1.15 wow really need to get out of the 1st half of the draft.... Alfred "the butler did it" Morison WR Nevada at 6' 198 not a huge guy but with the 2nd best bench he will look to be a go to guys especially over the middle should be an excellent safety blanket for our 4th round pick. he may not be a beast, but with his good agility (see YAC) he WILL be an animal all but 1 blue score and the 2nd highest drill score. low volatility 5! and 26% developed. looks like we have a winner

                <a href="http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/strickzilla/?action=view&current=MontyLester2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/strickzilla/MontyLester2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

3.13 OLB Monty Lester Wake forest at 6'4 252lbs huge man skipped the combine but a blue sole and drill score and being 35 developed makes taking him in the 3rd round not too muck of a risk high intelligence and play diagnosis and good coverage skills fits into my scheme well. should be my opening day starter

                <a href="http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/strickzilla/?action=view&current=BuddyFoley.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/strickzilla/BuddyFoley.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

4.12 Buddy Foley QB Notre dame 6'2 233 supreme athlete (red) 4.51 40 time (second fastest) 3rd best agility time could be a running QB. to go with his good not great bars only 2 bad things 7 reps? (really) and his 98 volatility (ouch) meh 4th round pick good risk reward guy

                <a href="http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/strickzilla/?action=view&current=TitoJones.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/strickzilla/TitoJones.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

5.16 Tito Jones Tito Jones LSU S/CB a bit smallish 5'9 but smart blue scores for his sole and position drill, good hands nice big INT bar could be a good Nickle?Dime guy

                <a href="http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/strickzilla/?action=view&current=HarrisMaple.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/strickzilla/HarrisMaple.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

6.15 Harris Maple PR/KR from tiny Winona State. could contribute in the passing game tho in the slot or the 5WR package doubtful tho with his green (30) drill score

                <a href="http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/strickzilla/?action=view&current=OrlandoDouthard.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/strickzilla/OrlandoDouthard.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

7.14 Orlando Douthard CB Kansas State good INT bar and 43 position drill (just missed blue by 2 points) may not make the team because i have Chuck Norris in my secondary

                  2.21 - Stan Conrath - S - (43/67)
Now I just need to decide if I want to move him to OLB. He will probably play both this season regardless of what his postion is listed at. I feel really good about his current rating after trading out of the first round.

                  2.31 - Bob Benton - C - (44/75)
Yeah, the re-draft guy. Same rating.

                  3.31 - Dale Forbes - G - (20/66)
I knew he had to develop. We will see if that 66 holds up.

                  4.31 - Clarence Wiltz - CB -(21/44)
Eh. He will still probably get some run regardless.

                  5.31 - Mickey Crutchfield - G - (11/46)
Like Forbes, low development. Hopefully that potential holds or he is probably cut.

                  6.31 - Ken Watkins - WR - (18/32)
I'm hopeful with his combine he actually gets a bump here.

                  7.31 - Bobby Jacobs - CB - (6/25)
                  Looks like a miss.

1.29 - SLB Josh Caldwell (29/78) - With stalwart Wayne Green retiring we needed to fill this hole in our roster. Since the inception of the league, Anchorage has had two main OLB's (Green and Preston White) who have taken over 90% of the snaps. Caldwell will partner with 2nd year WLB Alonzo Tucker in hopes of a new dynamic duo at the OLB position. Caldwell had a very good combine piling up the #2 40 score, #2 agility score and #3 positional score. Look for him to start day 1.

2.30 - CB Desmond Sklenicka (26/60) - Going into the offseason we only had 3 CB's on the roster. We picked up Karl Schmitt in FA and we're very happy to have landed Sklenicka late in the 2nd. He should slide right into the nickel slot and will eventually replace Desmond Gougeon when he retires.

3.29 - T Tito Sanderson (20/44) - Sanderson will start the year as a backup and we hope to develop him into a RT.

4.30 - DE Phil Flowers (16/52) - A position of weakness for us as we have not been able to fill the holes left by the retirements of R.J. Peterson and Tito Garrison a few years back. Luckily, we were able to land stud FA Marc Fisk in the offseason to fill out one side of the line. Flowers does have a shot to win the RDE depending on what we see out of him in TC.

5.29 - WR Donald Hancock (26/55) - At this time in the draft we started looking at BPA and not at overall need. We took Hancock on a flyer and look for him to develop into a #3 receiver in a year or two. Donald will be hard pressed to see much action this season as Jay Nori has his two top targets Emmitt Hall and last season's first round pick, Donnell Powell returning. Plus we added veteran receivers Dwayne Holzberger and Christian Brown to add to our offensive fire power.

6.30 - G Brent Donaghy (22/45) - Brent will have to work hard to earn playing time this season, but should make the roster in a reserve role.

7.29 - QB Juan Hutchins (4/37) - Jay Nori has nothing to worry about here as we are not looking for his replacement any time soon. We'll send Juan to camp and see what happens. He is a long shot to make the club.

1-21 (Traded down) LG Keith Mathers - 37/55 - It is fully expected Mathers will be a force blocking for our ground game, we expect him to show nicely in camp and turn into one of the better G's in the league in a few years. He has uncommon speed and strength which we love in our interior linemen. We were going to pick him at 1.12 if no one took us up on our trade offer.

2-14 - RT Mel Fulcher - 17/47 - He has a lot of developing to do, but is a skilled raw talent and will be in the rotation this year. He may not get a ton of snaps right off the bat, but will eventually start for us opposite LT Dusty Wetnight.

2-16 - QB William Chandler - 7/56 - This was a gamble based on scout recommendation, as well as a decent combine. He is raw as they come, but will stick as a 3rd QB for now unless he shows some significant skill in the preseason. He will get a lot of work in those games.

2-26 - LB Larry Barrett - 22/49 - Not sure if we will keep him outside or move him inside, but Barrett was a bit of a reach in a position of need.. He has solid combines for a MLB, so he will likely be better off there, but we're hoping he shows better than expected and earns a key backup role this year.

3-15 - DE Norm Sheldon - 22/60 - Sheldon looks like he could be a bit of a steal in the mid 3rd round, he has incredible technique and great potential, and will be a big part of our front 7 as Donovan Kovel's career winds down.

4-18 - TE Mel Whiting - 29/76 - This late, we could'nt pass up a guy of Whitings potential, even though we really don't need a TE. We are almost sure the 76 rating wont stick, but he should at least eventually be somewhere in the 50-60 range, which will make him a fine compliment to Mike Smithson, and allow us to run some serious mismatches out of our 2 TE formations. If Whiting meets that lofty 76 overall, we'll be stacked at TE, no question.

4-24 - MLB Justin Cafferty - 14/38 - How Cafferty does in camp will determine whether we move Barrett or not. He has good combines, but is another prospect with a lot of development to do.

6-12 - RB Ian Webster - Webster has speed to burn, but is not very strong or agile, which means he better have a hole to hit if he is going to break something long.. Either way, a guy with that kind of gamebreaking speed this late is a good value pick. He will split carries with one or two other backs until one stands out.

7-16 - WLB Amos Flynn - 21/46 - We think Flynn was a nice find for our last pick. He has a lot of speed and can get to the QB, and his bars appear to fit his combine performance pretty well. We like him at the least as a situational pass rusher type at WLB in what will likely be a 3-4 scheme.

FA TE Ellis Harden - 20/41 - Our scout says this guy has it, so we snatched him up with no combine to speak of. He could make us 3 deep and very young at TE, which will allow us to leave that position alone for the next 10 years or so, a nice luxury.

                        Updates in Red

1.26 - WR Tito Webb 34/49 -> 38/53 (+4/+4) - This team is in desperate need of playmakers. Webb runs a 4.37, high agility, and looks like a good kick returner to boot. His BPR makes him look like a legit deep threat. Hot damn, looks like the real deal. I can't remember, in any league, the last time I had (what looks to be) a 60ish WR. Obvious starter.

2.25 - ILB Alfred Enochs 30/72 -> 34/64 (+4/-8) - Was looking more for an OLB, but just had to take Enochs. Apart from his PRT, looks like a total stud with 3 blues and a red. Depending how the numbers shake out, may move Sponable to OLB. Ouch on the -8, but I still like his bars. Huge PRS+PD+PH+EN, he can still be useful.

3.24 - QB J.T. Eisenbart 16/56 -> 21/53 (+5/-3) - Total stab at a project. May be a decent young backup, or may wash out in camp. No idea here. Little disappointing, but overall, pretty pleased. Learned two new formations with the default TC, has a look of an excellent backup QB.

4.23 - DT J.C. Flynn 21/30 -> 18/26 (-3/-4) - Another flyer, based pretty much solely on a decent PRS. Wow, total whiff. Off the roster.

5.26 - P Luke Kramer 46/66 -> 46/63 (0/-3) - Quality punter for a low 5th round pick, I'm ok with that. Meh. Holds the spot for this year at least.

6.25 - S Jared Betancourt 24/56 -> 26/49 (+2/-7) - Looks pretty good for a low 6th especially. Has the tweener size to maybe move to a CB position. Should be a contributor in some fashion. Disappointing, but still looks like a decent backup at both S & CB.

7.24 - WR Gino Vaughn 27/41 -> 28/38 - Hm. Not sure why I picked him, but probably because of the PR skills. Eh. May still make the roster, esp. with his affinity, but nothing spectacular, obviously.

Overall, pretty happy. Webb was really the key, and he's paid off. Enochs, Eisenbart and Betancourt look like great role-players.
