  • Portland's Draft 2017

Being failry new to FOF I am experimenting with different draft guilines just about every draft. Keep what works mostly.

I Was happy with my last draft in RNFL but made a big change, see how things work.

1-16 CB Casey Shannon: Phantoms need CB help, this guy was very high on the new system, not so high on the old. I was going to grab Browing if he lasted to me, but switched for a lower Vol player with similair ranking. Hope it works out.

2-16 OLB Mario O'Pope: We spent big $ on offense in FA so figured work on the D in the draft early, was going to take RB McCarthy or Gonzalez, but RB's were falling so I played the waiting game on them. Orbik was a strong possiblity NT's were going earlier but stopped so I waited there also.
Was fantasy hoping Provine would drop to this but knew better. We think we found a good OLB to work with though.

3-16 RB Billie Joe McCarthy: Under my older ranking he was back #2 but still was high in the new system so I wanted him, didn't wait any longer. Think he will be in line for plenty of carries, even if he starts as a short yardage guy.

4-16 TE Antonio Paeth: Wasn't planning on drafting a TE persay but I felt I had to grab him here. I like my TE's and he was grading out pretty high.

5-16 DT Lamar Hartzel: last of the NT's I had interst in so I took him, figured he was to good a value in rnd 5.

6-16 T V. Sunia: Well T was a need and none of the ones we liked fell to rnd 2, 3 etc. so we found someone to try and compete for a spot or at least be a backup.

7-16 ILB H. Lucas: ILB was light on depth so I looked for a good Run D WILB prospect to at leat help eat some snaps. This was not the top choice but who fell to 7-16.

We shall see how this all worked out.

Billy Joe McCarthy was the buzz of the draft room. 27 bench on a RB is a once-in-a-leaguetime number. Interesting to see how he turns out.

I liked O'Pope, but my current depth and his strength stopped me from going after him.

McCarthy is someone everyone wants to see about. He didn't have much to offer but his strength score, but he might just be the type of guy who carries dudes with him instead of getting tackled.

Paeth might be a nice grab in the 4th. Looks like a 50-60 guy.

As late as you got Sunia, he looks at the very least like an outstanding pass protector.

I liked Shannon a lot and he would have been an option for me had I stayed at 22 and my receivers were wiped out. Didn't figure he'd last though. Billy Joe...man, I have a feeling he's going to turn out to be very, very solid. Out of all the players in this entire draft, he's probably the one I am most excited to see in camp.

The tackle looks like a solid pick in the 6th, and the DT does not look half bad at all. I ahave to agree with Julio about Paeth. Just took a look at him and man...nice pick. 50-60s guy means major stealage for a TE in the 4th round.

          post draft update:

1-16 CB Casey Shannon: 20/42 - 43% dev. we are sure he should move up in TC, combines would agree with our scouting staff.

2-16 OLB Mario O'Pope: 21/42 - 47% dev. He looks to be a decent OLB all around can do most things, we were hoping for better #'s but lets see what TC brings.

3-16 RB Billie Joe McCarthy: 27/29 - 52% dev. We think this kid will rise in TC, how much is to be seen. His 40 was the concern but we don't see any reason why some of current bars won't improve based on his combines.

4-16 TE Antonio Paeth: 22/49 - 26% Dev. The Phnatoms front office is pleased they strayed from the draft plan and took this guy as BPA. Looks liek a solid move and another toy for Castillo to throw to.

5-16 DT Lamar Hartzel: 22/51 - 46% dev. Lamar was the only DT our scouts liked by this point, they knew what they were looking for, appears to be a solid for a round 5 pick.

6-16 T V. Sunia: 13/50 - 7% dev. Sunia is raw but has some potential that the front office liked. He can be a backup T whil ehis run blocking is weak, he has the tools to pass protect well.

7-16 ILB H. Lucas: 14/35 - 26% dev. Overall no complaints with this pick, our other ILB choices always seemed to go before we could choose them. He can play run D, and for a WILB that works.

Pre training camp the Portland brass is optimistic about this class of rooks, the top the picks weren't a high as we hoped, but 4-7 brought in alot of depth and futures look bright for a couple.

post TC 25/47 +5/+5 that is what we wanted to see!

2-16 OLB Mario O'Pope: 21/42 - 47% dev. He looks to be a decent OLB all around can do most things, we were hoping for better #'s but lets see what TC brings.

post TC 24/42 +3/0 was hoping the future would increase, but no - to be found with MOP so we can live with that.

3-16 RB Billie Joe McCarthy: 27/29 - 52% dev. We think this kid will rise in TC, how much is to be seen. His 40 was the concern but we don't see any reason why some of current bars won't improve based on his combines.

Post TC 30/34 +3/+5 would have been shocked if he didn't +/+ so we are good with that but expect/hope for more in the future.

4-16 TE Antonio Paeth: 22/49 - 26% Dev. The Phnatoms front office is pleased they strayed from the draft plan and took this guy as BPA. Looks like a solid move and another toy for Castillo to throw to.

Post TC 24/47 +2/-2 Well maybe not what we hoped for but ok for a 4th

post TC 27/48 +5/-3 Should be a decent backup

6-16 T V. Sunia: 13/50 - 7% dev. Sunia is raw but has some potential that the front office liked. He can be a backup T whil ehis run blocking is weak, he has the tools to pass protect well.

post TC 17/47 +4/-3 Backup pass protector

7-16 ILB H. Lucas: 14/35 - 26% dev. Overall no complaints with this pick, our other ILB choices always seemed to go before we could choose them. He can play run D, and for a WILB that works.

post TC 17/33 +3/-2 doesn't have much of a future.

In short not a - anyplace for the first 3 rounds, that was the good, 4-7 is a mixed bag of depth or maybe not a phantom.
