  • BKL 2024: Draft

We came into the draft with some definitive needs: QB, WR, OLB, S. SLB Dustin Bernstein is on the downside of his career and with WLB Perry Caldwell not putting up the numbers I expected of him moving to the 3-4, we'd like to move him to SLB and draft a WLB. At safety, we just don't have a dominant playmaker and we could really use one.

QB and WR have been needs since I got here. QB Desmond Kaplan was thought of as a one season bandaid, and ended up being a four game bandaid. OJ Musselman spent the rest of the season proving he'll probably never be the QB of the future. We did sign QB James Arnold to compete with Musselman, but we'd like to add another young QB to the mix.

    1.15 FS J.R. Shannon Edinboro
Not the best safety, not the second best safety, not even the third best safety in this draft, but we're still happy to have him. Our scout sees him as very underrated, and his combine numbers were good. He should start this season and should make his impact felt.

1.25 OLB Jorge Murphy Wake Forest
Jorge is one of the most odd prospects I've ever come across. Just looking at his skillset and combines, I had him as my #2 OLB behind Sam Fisher. Then I saw his measurables. 5'11" 215 lbs is incredibly small. Do I move him to corner/safety? Do I ask him to lift some weights? I haven't decided what to do with him just yet, but he's a great talent to have. If he can make it as rush linebacker I'd like to keep him there, but we'll see.

    2.15
We traded this pick to Morgantown for two third round picks and a second round pick next year.

    3.14, 3.19
We traded these picks, and a 5th next year, for a second round pick next year.

    3.25 DT Sedrick Myers Wisconson
Not a need pick, but I liked his size and his combine numbers. He should provide long term depth.

    4.26 WR Van Coleman LSU
The WR pool was pretty shallow after the first couple of rounds. His combine numbers were decent, and our scout sees him as being very underrated. I'm not overly enthusiastic about the pick, but he was the last worthwhile WR on the board, and we'll see what happens.

    5.15
Traded this pick along with a 4th round pick next year for Gainesville QB Burt Virola. He will enter the season as the presumed starter, and we'll watch what happens in the preseason. We're thrilled to have Virola on the roster. He has a career passer rating of 85, and can hopefully take our offense to the next level.

6.17 P AJ Shannon Ole Miss
    Hey, a punter!

7.16 G Hugh Groves Miami, FL
Eh, he'll be cut after TC. Good bars, good combine, 6% developed. Almost no chance he pans out.

Shannon I'm-not-sure-what-his-last-name-is looks like a really good safety. If I were looking for S, I would've been happy to have him. This was an insane draft at the top, for S. Maybe just talented at S overall.
