  • Washington 2025 - Where to go...

A.J. McGee, Harold Rogers, Casey Schaplowsky, Junior Bullock, and Brandon Sponable retired, a combined 58 seasons of Bombers football, and the remnants of the first, and only, championship Washington squad.

Austin Austin... three full seasons, decent QB rating, a 32-17 record. Should (probably) be a slam-dunk re-sign, but... well, first of all, he wouldn't take a (reasonable) long-term contract last year, so here he is in free agency. He's dumb as a post, so won't end up a mentor. So do we try and haul back in a 27-year old system QB that folds in the playoffs? Or do we cut ties with Washington's all-time winningest QB? This is a tough one. I predict we'll make a run at him in FA - but if someone wants to get ridiculous with him, we'll take our chances.

The running game - this is actually pretty good looking in 2025. 2nd year backfield Hanks & Tuiososopo oughta make a nice wrecking crew. Hanks didn't light the world on fire, but he did end up quietly tallying 1400 yards of offense and 7 TDs - the offensive Rookie of the Year. And that was minus a decent run-blocking FB for most of the season, as Tui was out with an injury.

Receivers - Still happy with Webb and Corbett, and will certainly try to retain Danny Russell (oops). But they are aging fast, and we don't have a TE on the roster. It won't take a whole lot to solidify this bunch for one more season, but it willl take some work and luck to make it an improvement.

Offensive line - This is where the patchwork is really starting to show. Donovan Mark is an unquestioned stud on OL, and Tim Hill looks adequate. We could really use another bona fide starter here.

Defensive line - another place where we could use some new bodies, but not necessarily starters. Mikeska and Grabulis will keep this line afloat, but hoping to land someone else at one of the other (presumably) two spots.

Linebackers - pretty threadbare here. Bromell, stud. Enochs, hopefully hangs on to his ratings and gets by at MLB one more year. We need depth and a legit starter either at MLB or WLB.

Defensive backs - Bit of a mess. Gaither, Stone, locked in. Broemer, Metcalf, desirable, but in FA (double oops). Nate Graham is on crutches, and there are no other safeties on the roster.

Very much a theme for the Bombers this off-season... we have half a starting roster of good starters, but that means we have half a starting roster to fill. We'll need to be active in FA and fortunate in the draft to stay on top. Should prove to be a real interesting off-season. On the plus side, we're in very good cap status, so we do have wiggle room to make this all work.

    FA NOTES
Austin Austin signed a still-reasonable deal after a contentious FA period. Without any astronomical outbids happening, there was no way I was letting him go when I could sign him for ~4 million/season. Do I wish we could've landed a stud QB in the draft? Well, yeah, but I always wish that. Double-A is the man again/still.

WR Danny Russell was retained, as were CB Kimble Loyd and G Jorge Farrell. Nothing major, but good to have them back.

CB Levon Broemer likes his monay. IN WACO. Eff you, greed-pig. (Broemer, not Waco)

Only one big FA pickup, and it was a center. But what a center... 62/62, 5th year stud Donovan Hoover. The Donovans (Hoover and Mark) will be a nice plow team up the middle, along with G Farrell.

    DRAFT

Not a great draft, and not a great draft pool past the mid-20s in the first round, really. Hopefully have some bodies that stick around here.

1.27 - WR Johnnie Dickerson - As was mentioned in the chat room, this was the area to over-reach for the 2nd tier of WRs. I put Dickerson ahead of Lovejoy, Barrientos, etc., by the slimmest of margins. He could go either way in a pretty big way... 99 volatility, 5'8"... if he does pan out, will be an awesome 2nd/3rd option, and really let us open up on offense. Deep threat? No. But I have 3 big BPR guys, so someone needs to clean up the underneath stuff.

2.26 - WLB Lionel Clancy - Trusting in the great camp numbers... he's an odd duck. 6', 214, may even see if he can play safety.

3.29 - OT B.J. Boehnlein - Apparently, I was in a gambling mood this draft. These first three picks are really weird/volatile (96 here). Might play guard.

4.28 - RB Brad Martin - nice camp, good looking ST rating. Eh.

5.27 - FB Clifton Minnig - GREAT camp, so nice to see four blues this late in the draft. Kinda hoping to try him at TE, even at 5'9".

6.26 - P Darnell Boone - Hm. I know I thought it was a good idea at the time...

7.29 - RB Mack Newsome - Completing my Hobbitt draft, the 5'6" Mack Newsome. Has some bars. Maybe an ST whiz. Dunno. Probably a schlub.

    So, to re-cap... drafted a 5'8" WR, a 6', 214 lb. LB, a 5'9" FB, and a 5'6" RB. Maybe I should've traded for Oglethorpe...

      I liked Minnig alot
I would have drafted him in the 6th to complete a new FB staff
best of luck to him next season

1.27 - WR Johnnie 'Tiny' Dickerson 27/51 -> 30/49 (+3/-2). A very average camp, but I'm still high on this guy. Very solid all around, 50 BPR, 60+ EN, 28% developed. Will start in some 3WR sets, should get plenty of looks.

2.26 - OLB Lionel Clancy 16/30 -> 20/33 (+4/+3). Nice camp, but... so? He'll stick around and get reps, hopefully he'll truly creep up over 40 sooner than later. Still curious about him at Safety (can move with no change to his ratings), but goes from 70 exp to 10. Don't think it's worth that. Will be the backup WLB.

3.29 - OT B.J. Boehnlein 19/28 -> 25/38 (+6/+10). Best camp on the team. Still not much to look at currently, but obviously sticks around to get developed.

4.28 - RB Brad Martin 25/41 -> 26/38 (+1/-3). Meh camp, and very meh bars, but an affinity and good special teamer.

5.27 - FB Clifton Minnig 25/52 -> 26/45 (+1/-7). Very disappointing. Great bars, nice camp, and ... this? Not hopeless, and a great ST player, but bummer.

        6.26 - P Darnell Boone 26/50 -> 28/50 (+2/0). Ok camp, but I just resigned Kramer, who didn't lose a point. Hm. Don't know if I'll carry two punters.

7.29 - RB Mack Newsome 25/43 -> 25/39 (0/-4). Run of the mill high-elusive guy. Good ST rating, but he's at the bottom of the list for making it in the backfield.

As expected, it was not a great draft. But not a disaster. Love landing a solid WR, Clancy & Boehnlein should develop ok, and special teams gets a nice boost.

First round of cuts, nothing too exciting. Scrapped the bottom three of this draft, and some undrafted rookies.

Very good news as camp winds down, Johnnie Dickerson went from 30/49 to 34/49. Springing up in a hurry. :D 7-10 targets each game too.

Feeling pretty good for opening day. Really missing a TE and a S or two, but whole lotta cohesion going on, and I love the WR corps. Anxious to see what my 2nd year backfield can do. CANNOT WAIT. :D

A whole lotta cohesion going on basically brought me to my bowl victory.
