  • Official DRAFT and OFFSEASON discussion thread

As the playoffs begin this evening, it's time to cast an eye towards next season so that the chumps who didn't make the playoffs (like me) have something to discuss and argue about until the inaugural OSFL champion is crowned.

First, here's a sample offseason schedule that another league (the IHOF) uses. I imagine we'll be employing something very similar.

Mon Official Start of Next Season
Tue Stadium Plan/Staff Hiring, Phase 1
    Wed Staff Hiring, Phase 2
    Thu Staff Hiring, Phase 3
Fri Ticket Pricing/Franchise Tag/Summer League (Draft Class Revealed)
Sat Round 1 of FA-1 (JUST Renegotiations)
    Sun OFF
    Mon Round 2 of FA-1
    Tue Round 3 of FA-1
    Wed Round 4 of FA-1
    Thu Round 5 of FA-1
Fri Round 6 of FA-1 (Last chance for Draft Interviews) - Amateur Draft begins (8:00 CST)
    Sat Ammy Draft Continues
    Sun Ammy Draft Continues
Mon Round 7 of FA-1 - Ammy Draft Continues
Tue Round 8 of FA-1 - Ammy Draft Continues
Wed Round 9 of FA-1 - Ammy Draft Continues
Thu Round 10 of FA-1 - Ammy Draft Continues
    Fri Round 11 & 12 of FA-1 - Ammy Draft Ends
    Sat OFF
    Sun OFF
    Mon Round 1 of FA-2
    Tue Round 2 of FA-2
    Wed Round 3 of FA-2
    Thu Round 4-5 of FA-2
    Fri Training Camp (Weight Training)

As you can see, they sim pretty much daily with some weekend exceptions to blast through the offseason. And even then, you're looking at a month-long offseason assuming the draft is conducted in a reasonable amount of time. I personally think this seems like a reasonable plan, but please speak up if you think we should be moving more slowly. I also attend Phillies games and have a life in general, so I can't promise sims would run right at 9pm every evening. But I can run one every night at some time or another.

As for the draft, this is the first matter we need to discuss. How much time are we going to give each owner to make their pick? Some leagues use a method of 6 "waking hours" where you can specify times when you'll be sleeping and not have that counted against your time to draft. Others employ a flat 12-hour time limit for each draft pick. However, even if every pick only took 4 hours, the draft would take over a month to complete all by itself. Which is pretty excessive, imo.

There's a draft utility that allows owners to queue picks in a list and we can use that to keep things moving. That way if you're not going to be around during a given day or evening, you can queue up an autodraft-style list and the utility will draft for you while you're away. But we need to establish a time limit for picks and stick to it.

I like the six "waking hours".

Plus, as long as we have a queue or big board ability, it should go fast.

I think everybody should be required to submit lists. In OOTP, we were going to have people submit a list at the beginning of each round. Drafts with time limits just take way too long in my experience. It also puts a heavy burden on the commissioner because you have to be around to do the autopicks if people miss their deadline.

I like the 6 hour limit, but I am a HUGE supporter of the BIG BOARD. Trying to run the OS Mock Draft is a nightmare and that's only 2-3 rounds.

Is there the ability to AutoPick at all? I could see myself drafting for the first 3 or 4 rounds and then let the AI take the guys that I'm going to cut anyway.

If we use a draft utility, that can take care of the lists and the autopicks for us. The lists can be up to 30 players long. I've been a part of two drafts so far, (eNFL,RNFL) and both took about a full week with about 65-80% participation. In the RNFL, the Commish appointed "Draft Deputies" of sorts, where those players had free time during the days of the draft where they could check in periodically and make picks for people who missed theirs. The real key is for every owner to keep the Commish and Draft Deputies informed of what their status will be when their next pick is due. If GM's can do that, there should be no problem breezing through in about a week ourselves. Personally, this league has a lot more participation than those leagues do, so I think we could definitely set a goal of about 1 round per day, starting slow and picking up speed in later rounds. I.E. Rounds 1-3 take about five days while 4-7 take two to three.

If we can figure out when most people will be available, it think it would help a lot in determining how to go about doing this in the most efficient manner.

I'm always available. Med Retiree don't ya know. I'm also a big fan of the draft utility. The DFL's draft went very very smoothly the past two years. There does need to be a draft monitor though.

Definitely need to go with the draft utility (marc at RDFL has a great one ) and a 12 hour real-time for Rounds 1 and 2; 6 hours for 3 and 4; 3 hours for 5-7 -- even with the draft utility it still takes a while --- Definitely need to ascertain the penalties for missing your pick and enforce them. --- just my thoughts (although I did make people wait 7 hours for my 2nd pick  )

A PM to the commish can turn that option on

Heh... I control the fate of the draft, since I pick first. I should get a few weeks to pick my first selection, as retribution for my 13 losses from you jerks this year. :P

You are just going to take the highest potential for a QB. It will take 30 seconds.

and then the QB will refuse to sign with such a lousy team

                        Ha, that's what YOU think!

                        ...

And you'd be right. Well, maybe... I'm not going to reach for a QB. If there's not a really solid one at the top, I'll have to think about trading down.

I'm going to be perfectly open about it... I want a QB or WR. If there's none at the top worth taking #1, I'm probably trading down. There's a CHANCE I'd take a stud T or DT or something at #1, but I'd hate doing that with the first overall pick.

I'm just praying for a QB to be there that's worth the pick.

Ah, that would be a total "Douchebag" move...

I like the 6 hour idea.

How exactly is the draft conducted? Do we just get the list and send our pick to Skerik for him to make the pick?
