  • OSFL 2010 Draft Discussion

    Draft time.

What does everyone think of the class? How does it fit your needs? Another Rando mock this year???

Going into this draft, the Portland Phantoms have 14 selections, half of which are in rounds 1-4. I expect to be very busy again during this draft, moving up, moving down, and bringing in a lot of players. Last year I think I brought in something like 10 rookies, and a bunch of them were busts. Lets hope I do better in 2010...

It's hard to predict how things will look for the Defenders as we currently don't have a pick until early in the second round.

I have a feeling I'll have to be making some tough decisions when draft day actually hits.

I think the draft is a bit thin on the top end. Really can't find a lot for my defensive end needs either.

There's only one or two quality DE's available in FA.

Yes, but if I remember correctly, one is really good.

Yep... of course that means a massive bidding war will probably take place.

Can I borrow about 10 million? I don't have the money to compete with the big dogs for the huge FA this year.

                  Question.

When renegotiating a player's contract, do you take the total dollar amount(sal + bonus) of their current contract and see if they'll spread it out over a couple of years. Or are you required to pay their original bonus, regardless of renegotiations?

You are still required to pay the original bonus when renegotiating. Technically, you already paid it since it's a signing bonus. Salary cap rules just allow teams to spread it out over the life of the contract, even though the money was only paid in year 1.

And even he isnt that good. His ratings are great but I'm wary of a guy who started alot but has a low number of sacks (6.5 is his career high), hurries and tackles.

This is the first year that our FA period looks like the NFL. In the past we had 3 or 4 studs at the top of the list because an owner was negligent and forgot to sign his players in time. This year most potential FAs were signed before the offseason and even the ones who werent were franchised (I was going to make a run at James Moreno (K, Camden) and Quinn Gaylor (S, Lake County) but both were franchised.

                        Speaking of the draft...

                        [MK Jr. hat on]

Looking at Charlotte's needs based purely on stats from the HTML, it seems they need the most help in the secondary as their 102.0 opponent QB rating seems to suggest. Only problem... there's no Leo Duffy to snatch up with the first pick. They could go with LCB Lincoln Ramsey but that'd be a big reach as there are much better players out there in different positions.

I'd trade down, pick up picks to fill multiple roles and hope Ramsey or another CB is available later in the Top 10.

                        [MK Jr. hat off/]

                          Don't I know it...

I think the draft is overall weak. I do think there's some decent depth on the lines though. I think skill positions suck, but again depth at QB.

At 7, we'll get a decent player, but I'm not looking for a legend. We don't have a 2nd this year, and that's probably ok as I just see a lot of the same after about the first 15 players. I have my eye on 3 guys at #7, I'm sure one will fall.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I really have no clue what I'm going to do. Draft Nori, draft the DT, or trade down. On one hand I know that Nori will probably be a beast and Madison isn't. But what if Nori busts? I kinda feel like Madison is at least serviceable. On the other hand I know that I would appreciate a stud DT all the much more. On the next hand I know I have a million holes to fill and if there was a great RB or CB I would just sit at #1 and take him, but since there isn't I feel like trading down wouldn't be too bad. I could potentially have 3 picks in the first that way and maybe 3 picks in the second. Lots of holes could be filled.

Because the truth is there are a lot of decent QBs in this draft, and if I want one so bad I could get one in the second. Not a Nori, but a decent guy. Same thing for DT too.
