  • Riders press day

    Tombstone, Arizona

    Training camp day 0

As the Riders get set to go into training camp this year with lots of questions. They do however return all 11 starters on defense last years draft picks Cris Lowe and "Mighty" Mo Lyon stepped in and started right away and did well.

on defense they did add in what was sidely considered a pretty big coup DE/DT Allen Rose. Rose give Phoenix size upfront that havent had since Donnie Creekmour was traded a few years ago. they have him penciled in to start in DT but they will move him around.

"He gives us so much felixibilty and will take a lot of heat off of me, im happy hes here" said DE Isaac Andrews who is just 6 sacks away from the 100 sack club.

on offesne the story is different, with 4 different Qb's starting last year the offense was abysmial, along with the injuries along the front line this offseason is crucial.

the big question is up fron where Ethan fox suffered a season ending knee injury and has been working to rehab, made tougher by the lockout and not being able to use team faclities.

to address teh qb issue Phoenix has 5 qb's on teh roster picking up some journymen and former starter Tom Skeen. Skeen is there to keep the seat warm for Lamont Emmerson. Skeen was very happy to have a chance to start be it only for a year or 2 as he eyes retirement, "its a great situation with Alfred (morrison), Kris (burke) and HB (Harvey Bettie), we are really gonna open things up this year to take some of teh pressure off of Will (sumway)"

The probowl RB will be 30 this year so him carrying the ball 300 times may not be practical, especially behind the aging line they have. Skeen also pointed out "last year they only allowed 17 points a game so, were +10 in takeaways. so they have built a good defense here my job is to get some points on the board".

that in itself could be a tough job ans the riders were very inefective suffing thier first shoutout in over 5 years at teh hands of division rival Utah. Morrision was injured for that game and had only 1 catch, but doesnt make any excuses "it was a crucial point in our season I mean if we win that game were at .500 going into a bye week, but we just didnt show up. sure ethan was out i wasnt 100% but we just werent in that game, at least our hearts werent"

this year they look for a good traning camp for skeen to get in sync with not only morrison et all but also shumway who posted his highest catch total in 5 years. Head coach Roger Kenny said "we got a 30 year old Rb we got to get him touches in more creative ways, out of the backfield in the slot. hell he may even return kicks!"

The Phoenix Riders broke camp in Tombstone and headed to their faclity in Tempe to install the gameplan and prepare for the presreason opener against teh Jags.

This camp was an important one Ethan Fox looks to be recovered from a season ending knee injury along with the other vets who werent affected by the lockout, the exception being Leonard Strickland who was cut at camps end to get the roster down to 60. Loenard who had 2 solid seasons in the desert came back to camp very out of shape and looked "old". Rumor has it that after he signed a 4 year $16 million extension at the end of last year he went on a bender and never relly "came back".

Luckly for phoenix DT is a postion of depth with FA signing's Wendell Parish, and of course Allen Rose who will play DT and DE. The other spots on the line look to be ok at least for now as Isaac Andrews and Dennis Treu get longer in the tooth. A major overhaul is in the near future.

one of the bigger supries has been FA rookie Bernie "mac" Richardson, the 5'11 189 WR from LSU has been a pleasent suprise he was brought in to be in the practice suad returning kicks while vet KR Gene Office got some rest, but when the first kick he returned he took to the house 93 yards everyone perked up.

so they kicked another one to him and he went 97 yards. Everyone was impressed, owern Strick said "gotta love theose SEC guys". Office had his sagely advice "returning kicks aint about speed, its about seing the lanes finding the angles and most of all balance when your going liek that it doesnt take much to knock you off your stride". and for a finale "Mac" took some reps with the first team and didnt drop a single ball QB Tom Skeen said "the kid runs great routes catches the ball with his hand and god hes got strong hands". He should as he was a 2 sport star in high school and college in basket ball and football. He started 4 years at LSU at point gaurd and he was known for he fearless play in the lane giving up his body, but the NBA didnt call him. "at least we got pads so when i take bumps it doesnt hurt as much" Richardson said after a practice when he was told hed made teh 60 man roster.

Skeen also talked about the new play book, "well when youve been in the game as long as i have there are no 'new' playbooks. its just a matter of learnign the terminolgy and the reads. Buddy (foley) has been great helping me with that, hes gonna make one heck of a good QB coach one day. in fact for the first game the hot calls will come from Alfred Morrison." So on the eve of preseason week 1 the riders are ready as they can be.

the riders returned home for a week 2 preseason game rookie lamont emmerson got the lion's share of the work and led the team to 2 td drives converting a interception by LB Percy Hampton the other a 6 play 89 yard drive, he got the team into fg position with time running out but a holding penalty pushed them back and they missed a 58 yard fg and lost the coin toss in ot.

the defense forced 4 turnovers more cuts loom and more injuries, the team looks almost ready they have been a little pass happy but thats been by design, this week according to coach Kenny they will be getting back to a more balanced offense the riders travel cross country this week to face Allen Rose's former team boston.

even tho its pre-season it would be good to get a win to get in the right frame of mind. it will be a interesting battle with WR Alfred Morrison vs CB Nicky Wallace

        (borrowing washingtons format)

        Phoenix 34 Boston 7

offensive explosion this week still not pleased about the 6 3 and outs, 2 of those were in the 4th Q but still, week 17 of 2017 was the last time we scored 34 or more points. ran the ball well, great balance even took a fumble(our own) for a td LOL. looked liek a damn reunion party with bostons starting te and wr's and thier backup qb being roster cuts from me.

good game in that everyones healthy, and we picked up KR extrodinare Winfred Ellison to bolster my special teams, speaking of ST 3 punts inside the 10. Special teams will win me at least 3 games this year

Damnit! I spent all that bonus money on Ellison just so he wouldn't go to Phoenix.

WTF, rest of league. y'all failed me :( Figured someone else would sign him, or at least he'd go to an AI team.

I did want to keep him for a while too, but didn't have room.

Haha, after trading away 2/3s of my starting DL, I'm not sure.

                Phoneix 18 Charlotte 0

wow 1st shutout ever against the CPU so meh but great way to finish the preseason 2 wins in a row could have been 3, tom skeen was feeling frisky breaking free for a 22 yard gallop very very impressed with WR Bernie Richardson 3 targ 3 catches 40 yds all 3 were for 1st downs

injury to Rb C.j. Alcott and WLB Rondell Starks hurt us a bit while Ethan Fox is still on the mend and talkign to A.j. McGees doctors. we escaped failry healthy. now its time to put some points on the board.

and it wont be easy week 1 against Denver owner or not the team is talented.

I got to think that Denver are the preseason AC West favorites...

says the defending division champ you are just trying to lower expectations for yourslef buddy not gonna work, your team is young Boone is improving you had a good draft i see 10 wins in your future and sadly another division crown with LA 2nd with an 8-8 season and myself at 6-10

i WILL say this tho if i can FINALLY figure out how to get skeen rolling and i average at least 20 points a game i think i can challenge for the division title.

I was sorta underselling Utah last year (although chuck was in the division and that was a big reason why), but not this year. I traded away my 69/69 DE, and my 54/54 NT. Also my starting LG from last year, and a 59/59 TE. It's Boone or bust - and now he'll be at less than 100% for the first five weeks of the year.

I agree that Phoenix might suck, though! ;-D JK, cheers buddy. Really though, this division is going to be once again hard to prognosticate. Denver's strength of roster is just hard to ignore, but they're CPU. They also had by far the best draft haul of talent in this division just by their top two picks, I think. Los Alamos is probably going to have a monster running game, and we all remember how Jughead turned that Washington team around in a hurry. Matching up against LA, I traded away my best run-stoppers and gave him a top-shelf run blocker.

And I'm less familiar with your roster, but you got a QB, which was your big problem last year I think.

Lots of questions will be answered in week 1 in the AC West...

From your mouth to the Football God's ear though preseason didn't show it. Hawley was great pick up but I think our new FB Fears is really going to add to the equation also. I had hoped that I had added to my defense but preseason didn't show it.

I tend to not worry about Phoenix so much and just mark them down as an automatic win...

                              Week 1 post game

well we did what we said wed do Skeen was efficient completing 23-34 225 and 2 td's completing to 8 different receivers and the game winning drive going 96 yards in only 9 plays.

it was also a bit of a chippy game both teams were called for late hits there is definately some heat this year in the AC West
