In surprising news, QB O.J. Sheldon has decided to make a return next season with the Portland Phantoms. Sheldon went down in week 3 with an injury that looked like it would end the former first round picks career but after mulling it over with his family, he has decided to delay his retirement for at least another season.

Another item of good news for the Phantoms is the return of safety Ralph Reid who will be entering his 14th season and has proven that he can still play at the highest level

I think Yuma is about to do a minor purge/reset by letting go most of our expiring contracts and trying to set ourselves up to really build back into a contender in a few seasons. I expect we will probably be a little thin on depth this year, but the hope is that we can find a QB to settle down with after years of searching.. The thought is that Recker could be the guy, but we'll probably have several other candidates to consider before putting our chips in that pile. We also need to find a damn RB. The offensive line is a patchwork of old and/or bench guys. Defensively our secondary is aged and has lost some serious depth. Our front 7 is decent to good, and our receiving corps is excellent.

With the holes we have, we won't contend unless we find a QB or fix most of those holes and stick with Recker. Should be interesting trying to get all that done.

Retired Totems/Ex-Totems of Note:

Amos Irwin was a great linebacker and stayed with Dakota for his entire 12 year career. He was a starter from day one, defensive rookie of the year and a starter until the end. He holds the franchise record for sacks and hurries and is 4th all time in hurries. He'll be missed but his contract was pretty big, so I'm glad I didn't have to cut him and see him play somewhere else.

Walt Johnson was picked up by us in the 7th round and he was a very good backup QB for us. He deserved to be a starter, but our offensive line was not going to be able to protect a guy with low sense rush. We traded him and he took a Vinny Testaverde-like sojourn of the league before finally retiring at a ripe old age.

Malcolm Rowland, the only top-tier WR I was ever able to draft in this league, spent 13 years in the league and 11 with Dakota, finally having a couple of breakout years late in his career. We just never ran a gaudy passing offense here in Dakota and that hurt Rowland's stats (until I went pass wacky in '36 and '37). Rowland was our primary kick and punt returner for over a decade, totaling 11 returns for touchdowns in the playoffs and regular season combined. He finishes as the franchise leader in all meaningful receiving and return categories. Malcolm also finishes 5th all time in Punt Return yards and 4th all time in all purpose yards.

Will Duckworth was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and he deserved it. :)

It is absolutely vital that we get this off season right.

We've let our backup quarterback, Cristian Drake, hit free agency. A very nice find as a UDFA and he'll always be remembered for coming out of nowhere to demolish Brooklyn in the playoffs in his first ever start, but it hardly seems right to let him keep languishing as a #2 man here. Hopefully he'll find somewhere to play and start.
